Before they played competing dads in the Daddy’s Home movies, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg starred together in a funny, but often overlooked, action-comedy called The Other Guys. It was their first time working together, and many consider it their best collaboration.
The Other Guys is a classic action-comedy that follows the popular “buddy cop” formula, and Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have great chemistry together. However, if you’re hoping to watch it on Netflix, you only have a few days left – it’s leaving the streaming service on January 1, 2026.
Released in 2010, The Other Guys follows New York detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg), who is sidelined after accidentally shooting baseball star Derek Jeter (appearing as himself in a funny cameo) during the World Series. When the city’s best detectives, including Samuel L. Jackson’s character, are killed on the job, Terry is forced to partner with Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell), a mild-mannered forensic accountant. Though they initially can’t stand each other, Terry and Allen unexpectedly become a great team as they uncover a large-scale conspiracy.
Okay, let me tell you about this 2010 action-comedy – it’s seriously packed with hilarious moments that have stuck with me. The setup is simple: Terry just cannot wrap his head around the fact that his seemingly awkward buddy, Allen, landed Eva Mendes. But the real kicker? Allen has this totally unexpected, darker side he calls ‘Gator.’ And honestly, Michael Keaton steals every scene as Captain Gene Mauch – the guy’s obsession with quoting TLC lyrics is pure comedic gold. It’s a really fun ride, and those gags are truly iconic.
As someone who loves a good action-comedy, I was really pleased to see how well this buddy cop film was received by critics – a solid 78% on Rotten Tomatoes is nothing to sniff at! It even took home the Best Comedy Film award back in 2010. It’s a shame it didn’t make a huge splash at the box office, earning around $170 million on a $100 million budget, according to The Numbers, but I still think it’s a fun watch.
I loved seeing Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg together again! After The Other Guys, they had great chemistry, and it was fun to watch them play off each other in Daddy’s Home. That movie was a huge hit, so naturally they made a sequel a few years later in 2017. They just seem to work really well together on screen.
Will The Other Guys Ever Get a Sequel?
It’s disappointing that we never got a follow-up to The Other Guys. Considering the success of action-comedy partnerships like Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, and Bad Boys, many fans hoped for another film. Sadly, fifteen years after its release, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s popular movie remains a one-time event.
Even though people still enjoy The Other Guys, a sequel isn’t currently in the works. The original movie didn’t perform as well at the box office as Sony Pictures had hoped, considering it cost $100 million to make. Because of this, it’s unlikely the studio would approve funding for another film, meaning a sequel is probably not going to happen.
Despite the lack of concrete plans, the ongoing working relationship between Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg keeps the possibility of a The Other Guys 2 alive. Both actors have indicated they’d be willing to work together again, and their combined star power could potentially convince Sony to make a sequel. However, neither Ferrell nor Wahlberg has actively pushed for another film, so the future of the franchise remains unclear.

Even though it’s leaving its current streaming platform after the new year, The Other Guys will likely continue to be a beloved movie for fans of action and comedy. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have fantastic chemistry in the film, and their comedic timing is perfect. A sequel doesn’t seem to be planned, but the original movie is still just as funny and entertaining as it was fifteen years ago.
The Other Guys is leaving Netflix on Jan. 1, 2026.
