You don’t have much time left to stream one of Winona Ryder’s most famous movies, and the holidays are a great time to do it! Besides The Addams Family, her other popular supernatural film from the ’90s will soon be leaving its main streaming platform.
I just found out we only have a little over two weeks left to watch Casper with Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman on Netflix! Apparently, it’s leaving the streaming service on January 1st, 2026, so I’m making sure to get my fill before it’s gone.
Brad Silberling directed Casper, a film written by Sherri Stoner and Deanna Oliver. Christina Ricci plays Kat Harvey, whose father, James Harvey (played by Bill Pullman), is a paranormal therapist hired to help the ghosts living in Whipstaff Manor. This is how we meet Casper, the friendly ghost, and his playful but troublesome uncles – Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso – together known as the Ghostly Trio.
The film Casper features Cathy Moriarty as the greedy Carrigan Crittenden, who owns Whipstaff Manor and is determined to find its hidden riches. Eric Idle plays Dibs Plutzker, Carrigan’s lawyer who often suffers abuse from her. Malachi Pearson provides the voice for Casper, and Joe Nipote, Joe Alaskey, and Brad Garrett voice the mischievous ghosts Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso.
The movie Casper was a huge hit in theaters, earning over $290 million despite only costing $55 million to make. However, critics and audiences didn’t share the same enthusiasm.
Currently, the movie Casper has a 59% negative rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 110 reviews from critics. Viewers aren’t much happier, giving it a score of only 51% on the site’s user-based “Popcornmeter,” calculated from over 250,000 ratings.
Despite not being the blockbuster its creators expected, the movie Casper still led to a popular series of related products. In 1996, the animated show The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper began airing on Fox Kids and, surprisingly, ran for four seasons before being taken off the air.
After the movie Casper came out, a couple of sequels were made for home video. The first, Casper: A Spirited Beginning, was released in 1997, and Casper Meets Wendy followed in 1998. This second movie was also Hilary Duff’s first big acting role, as she played Wendy the Good Little Witch.
What Does Casper Star Christina Ricci Think of the ’90s Cult Classic?
In 2022, Christina Ricci admitted she wasn’t happy with her performance in the movie Casper. While she acknowledges it’s a beloved film for many and holds a special place in people’s childhoods, she believes her acting in it wasn’t very good.

When I was thirteen, my life felt overwhelming and challenging. I was constantly frustrated and, honestly, I didn’t put much effort into dealing with things. Looking back, I realize I should have tried harder, but I lacked the motivation. It took me a long time to learn how to take care of myself and become a responsible adult.
Casper is available for streaming on Netflix until Jan. 1.
