Disney Becomes The First Studio In 6 Years To Reach A Major Box Office Milestone

As a huge movie fan, I’ve been following Disney’s box office numbers closely this year, and it’s been a real rollercoaster! They’ve put out a ton of films – everything from Snow White to Elio, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts, Lilo & Stitch, Tron Ares, Freakier Friday, Zootopia 2, and even Avatar: Fire and Ash. Some were massive hits, others… not so much. But overall, it’s added up to a really strong year for them – the best they’ve had in a long time, actually!

As of today, Avatar: Fire and Ash has brought in $450 million at the box office, helping Disney reach a major milestone: over $6 billion in worldwide earnings for 2025. This is the first time Disney has achieved this level of success since 2019, before the pandemic, and also marks a return to the strong performance they saw from 2016 to 2018. So far this year, Disney has earned $2.3 billion in the U.S. and $3.65 billion internationally.

As a huge Disney fan, I was so excited to see how well their movies did this year! Zootopia 2 and the live-action Lilo & Stitch were massive hits, both making over a billion dollars! It’s amazing how they can consistently draw in crowds with stories we already love. Even with everyone talking about superhero burnout and the new DC movies, Disney still managed to have three big Marvel releases that really brought in the money. Here’s a look at Disney’s top-grossing movies of 2025 so far:

Movie Release Date Domestic Gross Worldwide Total
Zootopia 2 November 26 $287.5 million $1.28 billion (to date)
Lilo & Stitch May 23 $423.8 million $1.04 billion
The Fantastic 4: First Steps July 25 $274.3 million $520.5 million
Captain America: Brave New World February 14 $200.5 million $413.6 million
Avatar: Fire and Ash December 19 $118.9 million $450 million (to date)

Warner Bros. was the second-most successful movie studio of 2025. They had an incredible year, with seven films in a row each earning over $40 million at the box office: A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, Final Destinations: Bloodlines, F1: The Movie, Superman, Weapons, and The Conjuring: Last Rites. Overall, Warner Bros. films earned $4.3 billion in 2025.

Disney has clearly benefited from focusing on family-friendly movies, especially those based on familiar stories. The strong box office performance of Sinners and Weapons was notable because they were original, R-rated horror films – a genre Disney doesn’t typically explore. However, Disney’s new, original movies, such as Elio, and even some of its sequels, haven’t performed as well.

The movie theater business has faced significant challenges since the COVID-19 lockdowns boosted the popularity of streaming services, leading many people to prefer watching new releases at home. While Disney and Warner Bros. both had successful movies this year, which is a positive sign for the industry, these successes largely relied on established franchises and familiar stories.

Disney is planning several new releases next year, starting with the original Pixar film, Hoppers. They’ll also be releasing sequels and remakes like Toy Story 5, Moana, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday, and a film based on Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. Several of these movies could be very successful, helping Disney return to its pre-pandemic profit levels.
