Kate Hudson Breaks Silence On Turning Down Spider-Man’s Mary Jane Role: “It Doesn’t Feel Good”

Kate Hudson recently revealed she turned down the chance to play Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movie. The role ultimately went to Kirsten Dunst, who starred in the 2002 film and its two sequels, Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007).

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live! with Andy Cohen, Kate Hudson addressed rumors that she passed on the role of Mary Jane Watson. She admitted she sometimes wonders what it would have been like to star in Spider-Man, but ultimately feels the movie ended up with the perfect cast.

Kate Hudson is thankful she filmed The Four Feathers in 2002, as it was a chance to work with and become friends with Heath Ledger. Here’s what she had to say:

It’s amusing to think about ‘what ifs.’ While it’s tough to discuss missed opportunities when you believe the right people ended up in a role, it’s natural to wonder about paths not taken. I sometimes think it would have been great to be in the Spider-Man movie. However, I also had an incredible experience filming ‘Four Feathers,’ where I met and became friends with Heath Ledger – something I wouldn’t have traded. Ultimately, I believe everything happens for a reason, and I’m thankful for how things unfolded, even though a part of me still wonders what it would have been like to be in that other film.

According to Cohen, if Hudson had taken the part, she might have appeared in several Spider-Man films. This would have also given her the chance to play a memorable character during the rise of superhero movies, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe began.

While Kate Hudson’s film The Four Feathers wasn’t successful, earning only $29.8 million worldwide on a $35 million budget and receiving a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, many of her other movies—from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) to Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)—have been quite popular.

Since Spider-Man 3, several actresses have portrayed Mary Jane in different films. Shailene Woodley was originally cast as Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), but her scenes didn’t make the final cut. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man movies, Zendaya plays Michelle “MJ” Jones. Zoë Kravitz voiced Mary Jane Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), and Melissa Sturm took on the role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).

The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) features Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things. There’s been speculation she’ll be playing Mary Jane Watson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although filming for the Tom Holland-led movie is finished, details about Sink’s character are still being kept secret.

Kate Hudson has two exciting projects on the horizon. Her new film, Song Sung Blue, co-starring Hugh Jackman, hits theaters on December 25th, and the second season of her Netflix comedy series, Running Point, is slated for release in 2026.

I read an interview with Kate Hudson where she said she’d totally be up for joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe if they asked her, which is awesome! But as of right now, she’s not in any of the Marvel movies or shows. It’s cool though, because even though she didn’t get the role of Mary Jane in Spider-Man, she’s still had an amazing career. I always thought she’d be great in a superhero role!
