Lily Allen reveals she’s undergoing therapy to curb her shopping addiction after becoming ‘convinced she’s a billionaire’ and splashing the cash on £120k Porsche and £16.5k handbag

She sings about being a West End Girl in her latest album of that name.

Lily Allen has revealed she’s in therapy to address a compulsive shopping habit she developed after experiencing success.

Despite believing she was incredibly wealthy, the 40-year-old woman spent lavishly and is now getting help for her compulsive spending.

On a recent Christmas special of her podcast, ‘Miss Me?’, Gemma Allen shared details of her recent spending, including a £120,000 Porsche and a £16,500 Hermès bag. She co-hosts the podcast with her close friend, Miquita Oliver.

She laughed, showing off a large diamond and emerald ring. ‘I bought it for myself – a little gift, though it’s definitely not small!’ she explained.

It’s important to celebrate and acknowledge achievements. I truly feel like I’ve reached a point of immense wealth – I’ve been buying luxury items like handbags, jewelry, and a new car to commemorate it.

The singer revealed she’s been undergoing EMDR therapy for the last four months to address issues with her spending.

As a lifestyle expert, I often recommend EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – to clients working through difficult past experiences. Essentially, it’s a really effective therapy that helps you process those memories so they don’t continue to negatively impact your mental health and overall wellbeing. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy backs this up – they’ve found it’s a powerful tool for recovery.

This therapy combines eye movements with talking, helping people work through difficult memories and feelings that feel trapped. It aims to lessen the impact of those memories, which can often contribute to various emotional and mental health challenges.

Ms. Allen described the process as ‘life changing,’ explaining that it typically begins by choosing a difficult experience to work through. You then focus on that experience, becoming aware of the feelings and physical sensations it brings up, which can ultimately lessen the pain.

When you’re working to break a harmful habit, like overspending or drug use, a helpful technique is to focus on the positive feelings associated with it and separate those feelings from your sense of self-value.

You know, I’ve found something that really helps me. It sounds a little silly, but I actually attribute positive changes in my life to a handbag! I tell myself this bag is helping me become a better person, and honestly, it does feel that way. I can’t explain the how or the why – I’m not a scientist – but it genuinely seems to be working for me, and that’s all that matters!

Lily Allen, whose father is actor Keith Allen, has faced a difficult year following her breakup from husband David Harbour, star of ‘Stranger Things’. The split, which occurred at the end of 2024, was reportedly very upsetting for her.

In February, she publicly shared that she had breast augmentation surgery, explaining it was a personal decision to boost her confidence and feel good about herself.

Her new album, West End Girl, came out in October and has received excellent reviews. It tells the story of her journey after her divorce.

After weeks of rumors about a romance with 28-year-old writer Jonah Freud, the two were seen sharing a kiss at a Christmas party in London last week.

Ms. Allen was spotted getting close with Matthew Freud’s son, Freud, at the Stringfellows nightclub, and the two later kissed.
