10DANCE: Netflix’s Global Hit Adaptation Of Japanese Manga

Netflix’s new movie, 10DANCE, is quickly gaining popularity around the world. Released on December 18th, it’s based on a Japanese manga by Sato Inoue and tells the story of two competitive ballroom dancers driven by their passion and ambition as they prepare for a major competition.

During the week of December 15th to 21st, the film 10DANCE was the fourth most popular non-English movie on Netflix worldwide. It received 2.6 million views and a total of 5.5 million hours of watch time. It was outranked by The Great Flood, Troll 2, and A Time For Bravery, but performed better than Raat Akeli Hai – The Bansal Murders, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Kaantha, La Tahzan: Cinta, Dosa, Luka, The Girlfriend, and Troll.

I just finished watching 10DANCE, directed by Keishi Otomo, and it’s a really compelling story. It centers on two incredibly talented ballroom dancers who decide to team up and compete at the highest level. They start off as rivals, but as they train together, a connection sparks. The movie beautifully explores how their partnership evolves, facing challenges not only from their competitive world but also from a growing romantic tension. It’s a classic story of rivals-to-lovers, but with a really elegant and captivating backdrop.

Ryoma Takeuchi and Keita Machida star in the film, alongside Shiori Doi, Anna Ishii, Shin’ya Hamada, Ôshirô Maeda, Nadiya Bychkova, Susie Trayling, Pasquale La Rocca, Arnold Baksi, Benoit Calpe, Jean-Pascal Heynemand, Greg Irwin, Harmeet Obhrai, Edoardo Sferrella, and Simon J Walmsley.

Even though 10DANCE has become popular on Netflix, it only has a few reviews on Rotten Tomatoes – not enough for an official score. However, critics generally feel the movie successfully captures the heartfelt romance of the original manga. They’ve especially praised the director, Keishi Otomo, the film’s emotional depth, and the beautiful dancing. Some reviewers did mention that the movie feels intentionally subtle and a bit incomplete.

Many viewers praised the film for staying true to its source material, featuring excellent acting, and beautifully portraying how love can actually fuel someone’s drive. However, some felt the movie didn’t quite live up to its full potential. While it’s a well-made, sweet, and heartfelt film, it feels a little safe, and audiences might wish it had been more daring.

With only a small number of reviews, 10DANCE doesn’t yet have an official audience score. However, those who have seen it describe it as a passionate, stylish, and emotionally powerful film, largely thanks to the strong connection between the two main actors. Viewers also appreciate the film’s moving romance and how dance is used to express themes of competition, longing, and fragility. Though a few found the plot straightforward or wished for a more conclusive ending, most were touched, enjoyed the experience, and expressed interest in a follow-up to 10DANCE.
