Chris Evans makes shock return as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday teaser

Chris Evans has surprised fans by reprising his role as Captain America in a new teaser trailer for the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, which was released on Tuesday.

After more than a year of speculation, it’s now official: the 44-year-old actor is returning to his role as the superhero, as confirmed by a clip released on Tuesday.

The brief video also revealed a heartwarming moment: Chris Evans, reprising his role as Captain America (Steve Rogers), is seen happily holding a baby.

Seeing him in the trailer might surprise fans, considering the last movie, Avengers: Endgame, ended with Thanos defeated and Rogers choosing to live out his life in the past with Peggy Carter. It seemed like his story was finished.

Steve Rogers, now an older man, passes on his legendary Captain America shield – and the title itself – to Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon (Anthony Mackie).

Despite everything, the short preview suggests he’ll be back as Captain America, as it shows him looking at his costume.

Chris Evans portrayed Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) from the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger through Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

The Wrap reported in December 2024 that he is expected to make a surprise appearance in the studio’s upcoming crossover blockbuster, scheduled for release in 2026.

The publication previously stated that Chris Evans would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Avengers: Doomsday in an unspecified role. This news came after Evans recently reprised his part as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in Deadpool & Wolverine, leaving fans unsure what character he’d be playing in the Avengers film.

Chris Evans isn’t the only familiar face coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’ll be joined by Robert Downey Jr., age 60, who will play the villain Doctor Doom in the upcoming film, Doomsday.

Robert Downey Jr., the actor who launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as Iron Man in 2008 and remained a central figure through 2019’s Endgame, will return to the franchise as the main villain in a new film called Doomsday. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously helmed several successful Marvel movies, are also confirmed to be directing.

I was so excited when Robert Downey Jr. revealed he’d be playing Doctor Doom! He shared the story of how Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, actually approached him and Susan with the idea. It was a really cool story about how the role was presented to them both, and it made me even more hyped for the future of the MCU.

In an interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast last year, he remembered a conversation with Kevin Feige. Feige had mentioned the possibility of a return to the franchise, prompting his wife, Susan, to ask, “Come back as what?”

Honestly, looking back, it just cemented everything for me. It totally proved, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that he’s something special. It’s like, any critic just doesn’t get it after you see something like that. It just confirms everything I already knew – he’s incredible!

Feige is a remarkably creative and thoughtful leader, constantly considering how to build on success and avoid falling short of expectations.

He suggested featuring Victor von Doom, and after researching the character, I was really impressed. He then emphasized the importance of portraying Victor von Doom accurately, saying we needed to get it right.

Once Robert Downey Jr. decided he wanted to play the villain, he and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige presented the concept to Disney CEO Bob Iger at his home. Iger was immediately enthusiastic about the idea.

You know, I was telling Kevin about wanting to connect with Bob Iger, and he asked what I wanted to discuss. I just said, ‘Everything!’ I really wanted to get his perspective on a lot of things, so I figured I’d just be upfront about wanting a broad conversation.

We visited Bob Iger’s home and began discussing what I wanted to achieve. He responded positively, and I was thrilled that he seemed to like my ideas.

Last year, reports indicated that Anthony Mackie, alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, would be in ‘Doomsday’ as Captain America. This would follow his debut as the new Captain America in the 2025 film, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’.

Oh my gosh, I’m SO curious to see how Marvel handles having two Captain Americas in the new stuff! It’s going to be wild, and I’m practically bursting with anticipation to see how they make it all work. Seriously, two Caps?! I can’t even!

Avengers: Doomsday is set for release on December 18, 2026.
