Stephen Amell Confirms 1 Wish He Had For Arrow Season 8’s Final Episodes, 5 Years Later

It’s been more than five years since Arrow, the show that started the Arrowverse, finished its run on The CW, marking the end of a long-running DC series. Oliver Queen’s story wrapped up in 2020 after almost ten years as a central figure in the Arrowverse.

At Motor City Comic Con, Stephen Amell reflected on the final season of Arrow during a panel moderated by Joe Deckelmeier for ScreenRant. He mentioned that, looking back, he wished there had been more time between the large crossover event and the show’s ending. He felt having a bit more breathing room would have been beneficial.

You know, I really loved how things turned out with the show, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. But thinking about it now, if we’d done the big crossover event a little earlier – around episode eight instead of later – it might have flowed even better. We had ten episodes total, and that feels like the sweet spot for when it would’ve hit the hardest.

As a huge fan, it’s fascinating to hear them talk about how the show could have ended! They were suggesting that if they’d had a longer season – maybe 16 or 17 episodes – they could have really done the crossover event justice, let things calm down a bit, and then crafted a finale that truly focused on Star City and its heroes. It feels like that would have given the ending the weight it deserved.

The final season of Arrow aired on The CW just before the COVID-19 pandemic began worldwide. This forced other shows in the Arrowverse that were still being filmed to temporarily stop production.

Earlier seasons of Arrow typically had 22 or 23 episodes, but season 8 was the shortest season ever made. The ninth episode, following the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, essentially introduced a potential spin-off called Green Arrow and the Canaries, with a storyline centered around Mia Queen, Dinah Laurel Lance, and Dinah Drake.

If Arrow’s eighth season had been longer than 10 episodes, it probably would have faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, like many other shows in the Arrowverse. Fortunately, the final episode aired on January 28, 2020, and featured a reunion between Oliver and Felicity in the afterlife.

After eight seasons of Arrow, the Arrowverse continued for three more years. The Flash concluded the original Earth-Prime storyline with its ninth season in May 2023. Though taking place on a different Earth, Superman & Lois finished its fourth season in December 2024, marking the end of the entire Arrowverse franchise.

Every season of Arrow is available through home media release and on streaming.
