Claudio Gama, husband of the late General Hospital actor Anthony Geary, has spoken publicly for the first time since Geary’s death earlier this month.
Richard Geary died on December 14th in Amsterdam at the age of 78, just three days after having surgery. His representative, Gama, confirmed the news to TV Insider.
On Monday, Gama shared a heartfelt message on Instagram remembering the actor, saying they had just said their final goodbyes.
Today, from Amsterdam, I said goodbye to Tony. As Gama wrote, he’s now at peace among the stars and will be deeply missed.
Tony’s passion, his dedication, and his artistic talent were truly remarkable. On behalf of myself, Max, and the entire family, we extend our deepest gratitude to all of Tony’s friends and coworkers for the incredible kindness and respect you’ve shown him.
Gama also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from fans following the news of Geary’s passing.

Gama explained that his friend always said everything he did as an actor was to show his appreciation for his fans, and that he wouldn’t have achieved his success without their support.
Tony loved to act and dance, and he also enjoyed simple pleasures like singing, drinking cola, eating candy bars, and being around cats. He was proud of his country and cherished his second home in Amsterdam. We’ll miss him dearly. Rest in peace, and may we all stay warm, safe, and healthy.
Gama shared a picture of the actor posing outside, followed by a slide showing several photos arranged on a table.
An old black and white photo of Geary was visible, and at one moment, their cat Max was sitting right in front of it.
Geary and Gama had been together for thirty years before marrying six years ago. They lived in Amsterdam with their cat.
In a 2003 interview with Soap Opera Digest, the actor shared memories of his time living in the Netherlands with Gama.
I’m finally living my dream in Amsterdam, and I have someone who loves me. I have a fulfilling life now, something I didn’t have before, and that means more to me than any amount of fame or professional success.
Looking back, Geary said he feels things unfolded as they should have. He explained that he didn’t possess the resources or experience he has now at the time, suggesting everything happened when it was meant to.

The actor was famous for playing Luke Spencer on the soap opera General Hospital, a role he held from 1978 to 1982.
He returned as Luke in 1993 and continued playing the character until he left the show in 2015. He also made a brief appearance in one episode that aired in 2017.
He received many awards for his work on General Hospital, including eight Daytime Emmy Awards for being the best leading actor in a drama series.
Geary passed away on Sunday, December 14 in Amsterdam following an operation three days earlier.
Claudio Gama confirmed to TV Insider that Tony had passed away. He shared in a statement, ‘This came as a shock to me, our families, and our friends. Tony and I were friends, companions, and husbands for over 30 years.’
The actor rose to fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s, becoming a popular star on a long-running soap opera where he played Luke, opposite Genie Francis as Laura.
Back then, they were dubbed a ‘supercouple’ and greatly boosted the show’s viewership. Their characters’ wedding in 1981 drew an impressive 30 million viewers.
Francis also penned a heartbreaking tribute to Geary after his shock death.

The actress shared on Facebook that she woke up and embraced her husband after experiencing a frightening dream where she felt her life passing before her eyes and feared for her life.
Frank Valentini, the executive producer of General Hospital, called her with the news of Geary’s passing.
Francis wrote that he instantly regretted not having spoken to his friend in years. He described feeling his friend’s death in a dream the night before, and said it felt like a part of himself had died along with him.
Tony Geary was an incredibly powerful and talented actor, considered one of the best. He truly stood out as a performer – there was no one quite like him.
Oh my gosh, he was just… incredible! As an artist, he lived for honesty, even if it was a little rough around the edges, or even a bit cheeky! But it was always funny, I mean, always! He wasn’t a hero, not at all – he was the opposite! He didn’t care what anyone thought, and honestly, even people who usually get offended couldn’t help but crack a smile. He was just… perfect.
She added that working with Geary was ‘always exciting,’ adding ‘you never knew what might happen.’
She wrote that he had ruined her chances of ever finding another love like him. She was heartbroken and would miss him deeply, but felt incredibly fortunate to have been with him. She felt a deep connection to him, even sensing his passing the night before. She ended with a tender farewell, calling him her ‘sweet prince’ and saying goodnight.

John Stamos recently paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend, Alan Thicke, remembering the unique actor and the positive impact he had on Stamos’s life.
The actor, known from Full House, also played the character Blackie Parrish on General Hospital from 1982 to 1984.
During the early 1970s, Geary appeared in guest roles on popular television series like All in the Family, The Partridge Family, Marcus Welby, and The Mod Squad.
Anthony Geary first appeared as Luke Spencer on General Hospital in 1978. He was initially hired for just 13 weeks, but viewers loved his character so much that he stayed on the show much longer.
He continued to work long after General Hospital.

This actor appeared in a variety of films and television shows, including Agony, Do You Know the Muffin Man?, The Disorderlies, You Can’t Hurry Love, Crack House, Weird Al Yankovic’s UHF, Scorchers, Night of the Warrior, and Carpool Guy.
In a 2023 interview with Digest, the actor shared that he felt content with his career.
After being on the show for over 30 years – practically half my life – I feel good about my time there. I’m proud that I consistently showed up, did my job, and even won some awards. I also enjoyed working with most of my colleagues, and I feel like I left at the right moment, says Geary.
Honestly, thinking about it all now, it was amazing! It completely changed my life for the better, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. So, yeah, no regrets at all – I’m just so grateful!
