The holidays are fun, but they feel even more special at theme parks. When your favorite park is decorated with Christmas lights and festive displays, it’s truly magical. Even if the weather is bad, a holiday theme park still offers a unique experience. However, some recent decorations at Epic Universe weren’t quite as cheerful – the lights created imagery that wasn’t appropriate for families.
This is the first holiday season since Epic Universe opened, so a lot of Universal Orlando fans were excited to see how the park would be decorated. For the most part, things did not disappoint, although there was a particular array of lights outside Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, the best Epic Universe attraction (don’t @ me) that struck many as somewhat, well, phallic. Universal Orlando Itself recently dropped some new holiday shots on its Instagram page, which confirm the display has been, um, snipped.

I can’t definitively prove Universal changed the display specifically because of the jokes, and not some other reason. However, I’m certain Universal Orlando noticed the jokes and modified the display to address comparisons to a suggestive shape.
Okay, so I’ve been thinking about those lights at the Battle at the Ministry area of Epic Universe, and it’s funny. There were only a few spots where they actually looked good. If you were up close, near the entrance, you could see all the plants around them, and it felt more like a classic Christmas setup. But honestly, it was only when you stepped back and just saw the lights from afar that they had that… well, that look everyone’s been talking about. It’s a really specific perspective thing, and it doesn’t work from everywhere.
Sometimes, despite careful planning, unexpected issues only become apparent once something is publicly displayed. While this specific mistake is new to us, theme parks have often made silly errors. In fact, many of these seemingly ridiculous things are intentional design choices.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is magical during the holidays, and the version at Universal Orlando, like the upcoming one in Paris at Epic Universe, is no exception. Despite a few unusual lights, the overall effect is truly stunning.
Theme parks generally stick with holiday decorations they like, using them year after year. However, this particular display has been getting some negative attention, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a completely new one next year. But for now, you can confidently bring family members to Epic Universe for the holidays without any embarrassment.
