Dr. Kate Adams has highlighted a frustrating pattern: successful women often face harsher judgment than their male counterparts. She believes this creates an unfair double standard.
The Real Housewives of Sydney star told news.com.au that she often faces online criticism for being single and not having children – something her male colleagues don’t experience.
The 42-year-old woman explained that she faces constant criticism about her personal life, even though she’s successful in her career. She says it happens every single day.
Adams highlighted Dr. Chris Brown, a veterinarian and TV personality who also works in Bondi, as a prime example of this disparity.
Both vets are well-known and in their forties, and neither is married or has children. However, Adams points out that only one of them consistently faces questioning and criticism because of this.
People often ask me why I use ‘Dr.’ before my name, pointing out that I’m not a medical doctor. But nobody questions why Dr. Chris does the same thing, do they?

You know, as someone in the public eye, it’s not just my work that gets looked at. It really feels like every aspect of my life – the choices I make personally – is under a microscope. It’s a level of scrutiny that definitely goes beyond just my job title.
It honestly bothers me to see people constantly questioning Dr. Chris about having kids, and even worse, yelling at him about it. It’s just unkind and completely unnecessary, isn’t it?
It just kills me how people treat Dr. Chris! Honestly, all the negativity she gets isn’t about how amazing she is as a vet – she’s brilliant, and has a doctorate, seriously! – it’s just… because she doesn’t have a husband or kids. It’s so frustrating! Like, leave her alone and focus on the incredible work she does with animals, not her personal life! It’s just awful to see.
She explained that the online harassment always centered on her marital status or whether she had children.
The reality star shared that she saves copies of harsh comments she gets online, many of which warn other women about her life choices or suggest she’ll be lonely in the future.
Although she can occasionally find humor in the harassment, Adams points out that the sheer amount and constant nature of it reveals how firmly old-fashioned expectations are still ingrained in society.
She noticed that when she shared parts of her life online – like updates on her home, restaurants she visited, or trips she took – she often received negative and aggressive responses from men, who appeared bothered by her self-sufficiency.

Adams believes the negative reaction comes from her living in a way that goes against traditional expectations.
She explained that those in power don’t want women to choose not to have children, not only because of concerns about declining population numbers, but also because it challenges their ability to control people.
Adams challenged the idea that having children automatically ensures support and security in old age. She pointed out that the costs – both financially and in terms of career opportunities – often fall disproportionately on women, a fact that’s frequently overlooked.
Everyone keeps asking me about kids, and she’s explained it so perfectly! It wasn’t like she decided against having them, you know? It just never happened. She always said she’d need to find someone truly special, someone she could really build a life and a family with, and honestly, she just never met that person. It’s not a choice, it just…is. And it makes so much sense to me!
