James Gunn’s DCU’s New God-Tier Superhero Can Even Beat Superman

James Gunn’s DC Universe is expanding with exciting new characters, and the latest addition is a hero strong enough to potentially challenge Superman. While David Corenswet will debut as Superman in early 2025, this new character could quickly become a contender for the title of the world’s greatest hero.

We already know the new Man of Tomorrow movie will feature Superman battling formidable villains like Brainiac. Now, reports confirm another hero will appear in season two of Creature Commandos. What’s really exciting is just how incredibly powerful this character is in the original comic books.

Captain Atom Is Joining The DCU In Creature Commandos Season 2

Nexus Point News reported that Captain Atom will be joining the second season of Creature Commandos. Shortly after, James Gunn shared photos on Instagram showing Captain Atom battling Superman, seemingly confirming the report.

In DC Comics, Nathaniel Adam is a Vietnam War veteran who gains amazing powers due to a failed military experiment. Nearly dying during the process, he becomes connected to the Quantum Field, giving him incredible abilities like flying, becoming invulnerable, absorbing energy, and possessing super strength and speed – powers similar to those of Superman.

Captain Atom possesses incredible powers, including time travel, the ability to alter reality, and matter creation. His body has also been changed, giving him an incredibly durable, metallic skin. Because of these abilities, he’s a force to be reckoned with in the DC Universe, potentially even on par with Superman.

How Strong Is Captain Atom Compared To Superman?

I’ve always been amazed by Captain Atom. He consistently does things that seem absolutely unbelievable, even for a superhero! I mean, he’s actually broken constructs made by Green Lantern, Hal Jordan – that’s incredible! And he once punched Firestorm so hard he knocked him right out of his own energy form. It’s like he doesn’t have any limits, constantly redefining what’s possible.

Beyond his other feats, Captain Atom once knocked out Mr. Majestic, a superhero with powers similar to Superman, with a single punch. More recently, a comic storyline called DC K.O.: Superman vs. Captain Atom showed Captain Atom defeating and even temporarily killing Superman. However, the story was reversed, and Superman was brought back with new abilities to allow him to ultimately win.

If Superman hadn’t become DC’s most popular hero, Captain Atom probably would have been the one who ultimately succeeded.

Captain Atom Deserves To Be In James Gunn’s Justice League

First appearing in comic books in 1960, this character was created alongside the artists who also brought Spider-Man and Doctor Strange to life. However, he didn’t join the DC Comics universe until the mid-1980s, when he was given the name Nathaniel Adam.

Since then, he hasn’t been in any live-action movies or shows. He’s made a few appearances in animated DC series, but his introduction to the DC Universe could be the chance for the character to really stand out and become well-known.

Given how powerful Captain Atom is, it makes sense for him to become an ally to the heroes, and maybe even join the Justice League. James Gunn is clearly focusing on underused characters and shaking things up in his DC Universe, so having Captain Atom become a key player after his introduction in season two of Creature Commandos would be a great fit.
