Be warned, the following contains major spoilers for the season 1 finale of The Mighty Nein, “The Zadash Job”! Fjord and Jester have quickly become a fan-favorite couple in The Mighty Nein, but the actors who voice them, Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey (from Critical Role), suggest their relationship will develop gradually. The characters met in episode 2 of the Prime Video series when Jester’s mischievous prank led her to accidentally run into Fjord, and his reaction complicated things further.
Marion asked the group, known as The Mighty Nein, to protect her on a journey to Zadash. During this trip, Fjord and Jester joined the Nein after meeting at a traveling carnival. While searching for the enigmatic Luxon Beacon, Fjord and Jester began to develop a close bond, even though Fjord hadn’t been truthful about his past as a ship captain.
To celebrate the newest episode, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey about the first season of The Mighty Nein. When asked about the developing relationship between their characters, Bailey shared that it’s been enjoyable watching Jester develop a crush on Fjord, describing him as a “strong hero who unexpectedly saved the day.”
Laura Bailey explained that her character consistently shows affection for Fjord throughout the first season, even during the original campaign. She openly pursued a romantic connection with Fjord then, and she’s pleased with how that dynamic has been portrayed. However, she believes the key difference lies in seeing Fjord’s reciprocal feelings for Jester.
Expanding on Bailey’s comments, Willingham explained that the first season of The Mighty Nein is unfolding like a prequel, allowing the writers to deeply develop the characters’ histories. He highlighted a key dynamic where Fjord is seeing himself reflected in Jester, and Bailey’s character is seeing Fjord in a completely new and insightful way – a perspective he believes no one has offered him before. Willingham, who leads Critical Role Productions and is an executive producer on the show, emphasized the significance of this fresh perspective on his character.
Willingham explained that a major part of Fjord’s story, both in the main campaign and the first season of The Mighty Nein, revolves around him “discovering his identity while grappling with his newfound powers,” and also understanding his connection with Jester. He shared his enthusiasm for seeing how their potential romance will unfold in future episodes.
I think the relationship between those characters is fantastic – it’s a really well-paced, developing story. It’s a lot of fun exploring all the possibilities at this early stage. Plus, it’s hard to keep a straight face when Laura is performing; it’s complete chaos in the recording booth!
The last few episodes of The Mighty Nein season 1 showed Fjord beginning to acknowledge Jester’s romantic feelings. However, the season ended with a shocking twist during a battle with Kryn Dynasty soldiers. After being magically blinded and seriously injured, Fjord lost control to the leviathan that had been sustaining him all season. He violently defeated a soldier, draining their life force through a strange mutation on his arm.
When Jester tried to reassure him, Fjord, still incredibly powerful, unexpectedly turned and let out a frightening growl before regaining control. Jester clearly seemed scared by his reaction, and this could create problems for their relationship and any chance of romance in the second season of The Mighty Nein. Bailey’s character might lose the trust she once had in him.
However, the season also presented other difficulties for Jester and Fjord’s relationship. Later in season 1 of The Mighty Nein, Jester struggled to make the group believe in The Traveler, causing her to question her own beliefs. This happened around the same time the group considered breaking up, and without Fjord’s support, it created a subtle tension between them as they began planning the heist for The Beacon.
The first season of The Mighty Nein has made some changes from the original Critical Role campaign, so the way Fjord and Jester’s relationship develops in the show might be different. While Taliesin Willingham and Laura Bailey have suggested it will still be a gradual romance, like in the campaign, the show’s unique take on the characters could lead to Fjord and Jester becoming closer more quickly.
