Although Goodbye June takes place during the holidays, Kate Winslet doesn’t see it as a Christmas movie. She doesn’t mind if people think of it that way, but she emphasizes that the film’s emotional depth resonates at any time of year.
This heartwarming drama, penned by Kate Winslet’s son Joe Anders, centers on a family who come together to support their mother, June (played by Helen Mirren), as she faces declining health during the Christmas season.
Kate Winslet, speaking to Digital Spy before the movie comes out on Netflix this week, shared that the story’s broad appeal means it’s not specifically a Christmas story, despite being set during the holidays. Winslet also plays Julia, June’s daughter, in the film.

The actor, who also directed and produced the film, said he enjoyed the Christmas setting, though he doesn’t consider it a Christmas movie, despite some people describing it that way.
I believe this movie would have resonated with audiences even if we’d released it in May. Its themes of difficult family relationships and personal struggles are relatable to many people, regardless of when they see it.

The Christmas setting Joe cleverly wove into the script was a brilliant idea. It creates a natural sense of urgency as time passes and we build towards a major, impactful event that’s important to everyone.
They’re siblings who are really hoping their mother will make it to Christmas, so they can share one last holiday with her, and it’s incredibly sad.
Beyond enhancing the story and its ideas, the filming location also helped Kate Winslet personally, making her work on the project even more meaningful.

We wanted our film to feel warm and inviting, and we achieved that through the visual details – things like the production design, costumes, and especially the beautiful Christmas lights and colorful tinsel we used,” she said.
The film Goodbye June boasts a talented cast, featuring Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, and also includes Timothy Spall, Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Stephen Merchant, Jeremy Swift, and Fisayo Akinade.
Goodbye June is out now in select UK cinemas, and is released on Netflix on 24 December.
