First trailer finally lands for Christopher Nolan’s star-studded “epic” The Odyssey

The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s film, The Odyssey (based on the classic Greek story), is now online! We’ve seen a few trailers in theaters already, and this one gives us a glimpse of the impressive cast in their ancient Greek costumes, plus a look at Nolan’s innovative filmmaking techniques.

The story centers on Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, and his soldiers as they journey home to their families after the Trojan War.

Beyond the dangerous weather, the characters face mythical creatures, though the trailer doesn’t show much of that aspect.

The film features beautiful, expansive shots of various locations, which is expected given Universal Studios’ claim that it’s “a mythic action epic” filmed around the globe with cutting-edge IMAX technology – a point emphasized in the trailer.

So, get this – this movie is actually the first non-documentary film ever shot entirely with MAX cameras. Everyone said it couldn’t be done! The cameras were massive and super noisy, making it a really tough shoot, but they pulled it off!

Rich Gelfond, the head of IMAX, remembers Christopher Nolan calling him with a challenge: if IMAX could overcome some technical hurdles, Nolan would shoot his film Odyssey entirely on film using IMAX cameras. Gelfond says they were able to meet that challenge.

For his latest film after Oppenheimer, Nolan not only gathered top-of-the-line cameras, but also a cast of incredibly famous actors.

The trailer features glimpses of Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus, but the film boasts a much larger cast than just those two stars.

The cast includes stars like Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo, and Samantha Morton, among others.

This is the first trailer available online, though a shorter teaser was shown in movie theaters with popular summer films like Superman.

A trailer and longer scene are currently showing exclusively in IMAX theaters. If you see Avatar: Fire and Ash in IMAX, you’ll get an even bigger preview of what’s to come.

The Odyssey arrives in cinemas, both regular and IMAX, on 17 July 2026.
