Chris Pratt reveals seeing son Jack, 13, ‘fight for his life’ pushed him to devote life to God

Chris Pratt recently opened up about how the birth of his son, Jack, and Jack’s early health challenges deeply strengthened his faith and changed his perspective on life and fatherhood.

In a heartfelt essay for Maria Shriver’s online publication, the actor shared how his religious beliefs began in his youth.

He shared that he was baptized Catholic and had faith in God from a young age. Although he attended different churches – Catholic, Lutheran, and Evangelical – throughout his childhood, he said his consistent belief was in the restorative power of God’s grace.

The actor shared that he went through a difficult period, repeatedly falling into and out of wrongdoing, feeling ashamed, and then finding peace. This pattern continued until a significant event led him to rediscover his faith and begin praying again.

When my son Jack was seriously ill and fighting for his life, I turned to God in prayer, asking for a miracle. I promised that if he pulled through, I would dedicate my life to spreading God’s word, and this time, I truly meant it.

Jack was born nine weeks prematurely in 2012 and spent a month in intensive care.

I was so moved by what Pratt shared today. He wrote about his son, Jack, who’s now a thriving 13-year-old. It really touched me how he said he thanks God every single day for Jack’s life, and for all of his children. It’s just beautiful to hear how grateful he is.

He also recognized how difficult it is when prayers go unanswered, saying, ‘I understand many parents pray for the same things and don’t get the outcome I did, and I deeply sympathize with them.’

Pratt shared that filming a documentary about St. Peter in Rome recently led him to think more deeply about faith.

He described standing far below the basilica as a deeply moving experience, especially coming face-to-face with the remains of one of Jesus’ original disciples. He explained that it made his faith feel real – something he could actually see and touch.

Pratt then delved into the connection between faith and openness, using the imagery of light and darkness to represent inner spiritual challenges.

He explained that darkness isn’t something that exists on its own, but rather just a lack of light. He also shared that faith doesn’t make difficulties disappear, but helps us to leave them in the past.

He admitted it’s difficult to talk about religion in public, explaining that when he speaks out, it sometimes makes others confront their own beliefs, and instead of welcoming that, they push back.

Pratt explained that he feels driven to share the positive impact faith has had on his life whenever he gets the chance.

The actor has spoken before about how Jack’s birth reshaped his priorities.

He told People magazine in 2014 that the experience strengthened his family bonds and renewed his belief in God, fundamentally changing his perspective on faith.

He explained that when they first moved to the town, their main goal was to succeed as actors. But now that they have a child, their priorities have changed, and their son is now the most important thing in their lives.

Jack’s mother, Anna Faris, who was previously married to Pratt, has also shared her concerns about Jack’s early arrival.

In a 2015 interview, she remembered being frightened, but relieved when Jack appeared, describing him as small but healthy and reassuring.

In August, Pratt celebrated his son Jack’s thirteenth birthday with a touching message. He expressed how proud he is of the young man Jack is becoming and shared his love, ending with the statement ‘Jesus is King!’

Despite divorcing in 2018 after almost nine years together, Pratt and Faris maintain a friendly relationship as they raise their son together.

I’m so happy for him! He’s found love again with Katherine Schwarzenegger, and they’ve built a beautiful family together. They have two adorable daughters, Lyla and Eloise, and a little boy named Ford, who I just adore!

Meanwhile Faris tied the knot with cinematographer Michael Barrett in 2021.
