Even though I write about video games professionally, I actually liked Stellar Blade. It surprised me how much negativity some people seemed to have about it, especially considering its fans often describe it as simply ‘good, not great.’ I think part of the reason for this mixed reaction is that it’s the first game in a new series, and as a debut title, it’s solid but doesn’t quite reach masterpiece status.
I’m getting off track, but I did enjoy playing Stellar Blade when it first released in 2024. As a story-driven, single-player game, I finished it and moved on. Last year, I tried revisiting it when a Christmas event added festive decorations and a cute Santa outfit for the character Eve. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the game to work. I tried again recently, after a year, but still had no luck.
The Endgame Save State Breaks Stellar Blade’s Christmas Event

As a huge Stellar Blade fan, I was really excited about this event, especially since it’s happening in Xion – the main city in the game, so it makes perfect sense! It’s like how cities everywhere decorate for the holidays. The frustrating thing is, I can’t actually get to Xion in the game right now. Last year, it felt like a simple mistake, but this year, it honestly feels like they just didn’t bother to make sure everyone could participate. It’s a bit disappointing, to be honest.
Like many players, I finished Stellar Blade and moved on – that’s how the game is designed. There isn’t any extended endgame or repetitive grinding. Once you reach the end, that’s it. My current save is right before the final boss, and unfortunately, you can’t return to the main city, Xion, from there. I could start a new game or continue with a New Game Plus, but getting back to Xion takes several hours. I’d rather not spend that much time just to participate in a lighthearted Christmas event.
This update doesn’t add significant new content like a large expansion. It’s mostly cosmetic – new outfits and visual changes – which fits the game’s emphasis on fashion. It’s really aimed at players who have already finished the main story and want more customization options for their character, Eve. However, it only truly benefited those who were already playing the game when it was released, eight months after the initial launch. Considering the game takes about 30 hours to complete, very few players would have been at that point after eight months.
Why Can’t I Play Stellar Blade’s Christmas DLC?

Honestly, none of this is a huge issue. I probably won’t replay Stellar Blade until the sequel comes out, which won’t be for a while. I can just look at pictures of the outfit online – it’s pretty cute, and that’s all I really want from it. It feels a little frustrating, though, that even though the event is free, it rewards players for not finishing the game. If you beat the game, you miss out, but if you stop partway through and return, you get a new outfit.

I briefly tried the boss rush mode, partly to see how Eve’s updated design looked. If I could easily return to the main menu, I probably would have finished collecting everything and completed any remaining side quests to earn the last trophies. But honestly, it’s more about the gesture – this mode is a nice gift for players who are well into the game, but haven’t quite finished it.
I recently revisited Astro Bot to play its Christmas content, and I always check back into Animal Crossing: New Horizons when it starts snowing. These seasonal events can surprisingly deepen your connection to a game, even if they feel a little manipulative. However, Stellar Blade isn’t even managing that simple trick! I’m genuinely frustrated with the game – honestly, that frustration is far more irritating than any of the character design choices. Happy Holidays, Shift Up. All I want next year is to actually be able to experience your Christmas event.
