Superman 2025’s Most Terrifying Villain Returns In Official Holiday Art

James Gunn has shared new artwork for the DC Universe, highlighting one of Superman’s scariest enemies. The upcoming 2025 DC Studios movie will pit David Corenswet’s Superman against powerful villains like Lex Luthor, Ultraman, and a giant monster. But the most unsettling of them all is a character known only as Mr. Handsome.

In the movie, a grotesquely disfigured man appeared as a guard within Lex Luthor’s otherworldly prison, a place that defied the laws of physics. Since the film’s release, James Gunn has shared more details about this character, known as Mr. Handsome. It seems Gunn enjoys creating unsettling and intimidating villains, and he doesn’t show any signs of stopping.

James Gunn recently posted a festive image online featuring Mr. Handsome, a character from his film Superman. The picture shows Mr. Handsome dressed as Santa Claus, driving the prison transport vehicle from the movie, and carrying a large gift on the back.

James Gunn shared a photo of a holiday card sent to the cast and crew of ‘Superman,’ playfully referring to it as a ‘Mr. Handsome holiday card to the Man of Tomorrow crew.’ He credited the movie’s art director, Sam Avila, and wished everyone happy holidays.

While it hasn’t been officially announced, there’s a chance Mr. Handsome will reappear in future DCU projects. His inclusion on the Man of Tomorrow team’s holiday card suggests he might return in the upcoming movie.

The movie Superman, released in theaters last summer, is now streaming on HBO Max, along with other films from DC Studios. Work on a new Man of Tomorrow movie is still in the early stages, with a script completed and filming expected to begin in spring 2026. James Gunn is writing and directing a Superman sequel, which is scheduled to be released on July 9, 2027.

Will Mr. Handsome Ever Return in the DCU?

It’s still uncertain what role Mr. Handsome will have in the future of the DC Universe. The character started out seeming harmless, but has become surprisingly popular and complex since the film came out.

Following the events at the end of Superman, where Lex Luthor’s prisoners were released, the fate of Mr. Handsome remains unknown. Some believe he escaped and is now assisting LuthorCorp, while others think Lex may have deactivated him after Superman broke free from his artificial world.

The movie version of Mr. Handsome is very different from how he appears in the comics. In the original stories, he’s a typical Gotham City crime boss who has connections with Catwoman.

This version of the character appears to be a failed attempt by Lex Luthor to create a Superman clone, predating even Ultraman. While he might eventually evolve into the comic book’s criminal genius, he doesn’t quite seem capable of that role yet.

If Superman’s scariest enemy returns, it will probably be with Lex Luthor, helping him with whatever wicked plans the brilliant, bald villain is hatching.
