Kate Winslet is making her first foray into directing with the beautiful British drama Goodbye June, and she also has a leading role in it. Interestingly, when she initially agreed to direct the film, she hadn’t planned on acting in it as well.
Kate Winslet initially signed on to both star in and produce the film, which was written by her son, Joe Anders. When considering also directing Goodbye June, her first reaction was that taking on three roles at once would be too much.
Kate Winslet admitted she’s usually good at handling multiple tasks, but this situation was overwhelming. She explained to Digital Spy that she even tried to find someone else for the role, and had a strong list of talented people who would have been perfect.

Honestly, when I pitched the idea, Netflix wasn’t immediately on board, which was a hurdle. But I’d already envisioned this amazing cast, and I just had to work with them! As a creator, that’s what it’s all about – building worlds and getting to play with these incredible talents. It’s a really special feeling.
It’s amazing how you can truly connect with people, and sometimes at work, you build relationships that last a lifetime. That’s exactly what happened on the set of Goodbye June.
It might seem a little cheesy, but we really needed to connect as a family to make the movie feel authentic and relatable. It’s not enough to just come to work and go home – we had to build something deeper. Luckily, that’s exactly what happened with this film.

The film Goodbye June truly showcases Kate Winslet’s talent. She plays Julia, one of four siblings who reunite before Christmas after their mother, June (played by Helen Mirren), is hospitalized due to declining health.
To create a more realistic feel, Kate Winslet asked the crew to avoid using boom mics and occasionally had the cameras keep rolling even after she stepped away, giving the actors space to perform without direction.
It was a decision that was praised by her fellow cast members Toni Collette and Andrea Riseborough.
Honestly, working with her was amazing. She created this incredibly relaxed atmosphere where I felt totally free to experiment and take risks. She really made us feel trusted, and it allowed us to connect and just try things without worrying about messing up. It was such a great experience!

Riseborough explained that the film was made very efficiently, which is crucial when time is limited. She noted that Kate understands every aspect of filmmaking, drawing on over thirty years of experience and a remarkable intellect.
Being fully prepared means being emotionally available and ready to act whenever possible, particularly when dealing with children. It’s important to respect their feelings and understand they might not always be enthusiastic. Kate was fantastic with the kids and served as a great role model for them.
Goodbye June is out now in select UK cinemas and is released on Netflix on 24 December.
