If James Cameron moves forward with Avatar 4, the movie will go in a different direction than the first three Avatar films. The Avatar franchise began in 2009 and quickly became the highest-grossing movie ever made, even surpassing Cameron’s earlier hit, Titanic.
The new movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is now playing in theaters, and the director says the fate of future Avatar films depends on how well it performs at the box office.
Sigourney Weaver recently shared exciting news about the next Avatar movie. In an interview with Jake Hamilton, she revealed that her character, Kiri, will become the narrator in Avatar 4. Weaver described this as a significant development for Kiri’s story and mentioned she’s kept this information under wraps for around 12 years.
Sigourney Weaver: “Well, I narrate the next one, 4. It’s a major part of the saga for Kiri.”
Jake Hamilton: “When did you find out?”
Weaver: “Oh, like 12 years ago.”
The upcoming film, Avatar 4, will be different from the previous movies because Kiri will be telling the story. The first two Avatar films were narrated by Jake Sully, and the current film, Avatar: The Way of Water, features Lo’ak, Jake and Neytiri’s son, as the narrator.
As a huge Avatar fan, I’m really excited about the next film! It’s going to be a first for the franchise – Kiri will be narrating the story, and that’s cool on a couple of levels. Not only is she the first female narrator, but she’s also the first character who wasn’t born into the Sully family to take on that role. For those who might not remember, Kiri was introduced in The Way of Water as the avatar daughter of Dr. Grace Augustine, and Jake and Neytiri adopted her, making her part of the family.
Cameron revealed nearly three years ago that Lo’ak would tell the story in Fire and Ash, the third Avatar movie. He also mentioned that each sequel after The Way of Water would be narrated by a different character. This means Kiri will narrate Avatar 4, and a new character will take on the role for Avatar 5.
As a huge fan, I remember the director mentioning that Lo’ak really connected with audiences in the first couple of ‘Avatar’ movies. Because of that positive response, it felt natural to focus more on Jake and Neytiri’s son in the future installments – which I think was a smart move!
While the news is thrilling, there’s no certainty that Avatar 4 will happen. The Avatar movies are famously costly to produce, so Disney needs to be sure future films will be profitable before moving forward with the series.
The original Avatar film made $2.923 billion in theaters, and its sequel, The Way of Water, earned $2.343 billion.
Cameron has said that the future of the fourth film depends on how well the third one does. He’s already started some preliminary work on it, but a poor performance could mean the project won’t happen.
Although Avatar: Fire and Ash needs to perform well financially to keep the Avatar series going, the director might be rallying fan support to guarantee he can keep creating stories set in the world of Pandora.
The fourth Avatar movie is planned for release on December 21, 2029, and the fifth on December 19, 2031. However, these dates are subject to change. Director James Cameron is now considering revisiting the Terminator series, having previously directed The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and produced Terminator: Dark Fate.
Whether or not Avatar 4 happens remains to be seen, but if it does, the story will likely shift to focus on new characters, such as Kiri, played by Weaver.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is now in theaters.
