Tom Hardy’s “unforgettable” debut movie lands new UK streaming home

The acclaimed 2001 war film Black Hawk Down, which marked Tom Hardy’s first movie appearance, is now available on a new streaming service in the UK. It was directed by Ridley Scott.

UK viewers can now watch it on Prime Video, as it’s recently become available on the streaming service.

Tom Hardy made his film debut in Black Hawk Down, a movie based on the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. The film depicts the dangerous situation when two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down during a humanitarian mission, and the soldiers’ struggle to survive the intense fighting.

The film features a strong supporting cast, including Josh Hartnett (known from Oppenheimer), Ewan McGregor (Star Wars), Eric Bana (Dirty John), Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan), William Fichtner (Mom), and Sam Shepard (Mud).

Critics have praised Black Hawk Down, giving it a 77% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. TIME magazine called it one of the most memorable war films ever made, highlighting its powerful depiction of the devastating and immeasurable consequences of conflict.

The Los Angeles Times called the film a stunning achievement in filmmaking – a brutally honest and realistic war movie that often feels like a genuine recording of events, rather than a recreation.

Empire praised the film as ambitious and visually stunning, though occasionally a bit confusing. They highlighted it as a rare war movie that boldly challenges typical genre expectations.

The Midwest Film Journal praised Black Hawk Down, stating it conveyed the terrors of war more powerfully, clearly, and memorably than almost any other film ever made.

Good news for fans of historical dramas: the BBC has put Tom Hardy’s series Taboo back on BBC iPlayer. It was taken off the streaming service earlier in the year, but is now available again.

The show was created by Hardy, his father Chips, and Steven Knight. It centers around an adventurer who was presumed dead but returns from Africa to take over his family’s shipping business.

Black Hawk Down is streaming now on Prime Video.
