While increasingly prevalent, the growing emotional support offered by conversational AI to young adolescents presents a paradox: does mimicking human connection foster genuine help or undue reliance? This study, “I am here for you”: How relational conversational AI appeals to adolescents, especially those who are socially and emotionally vulnerable”, investigated how conversational style-specifically, emotionally supportive (‘relational’) versus transparent language-impacts adolescent perceptions of AI chatbots. Findings reveal that adolescents generally prefer relational styles, yet those experiencing social and emotional difficulties are especially drawn to them, perceiving these chatbots as more human-like and trustworthy. Data from the study indicated a strong preference for relational conversational styles among adolescents, with 66.8% reporting this as their preferred interaction method. This preference demonstrated a statistically significant difference when compared to the responses of parents, suggesting a generational gap in expectations for AI chatbot interactions. Specifically, adolescents showed a greater desire for chatbots that utilize affiliative language and build rapport, while parents did not exhibit the same level of preference for these characteristics, implying differing values in human-computer interaction.

A parent’s positive assessment of a chatbot’s style correlates with increased likelihood of allowing their child to use it for social or emotional support, highlighting the need for developers to consider parental perspectives when designing AI companions intended for adolescent users. Specifically, adolescents reporting lower family relationship quality, with an average score of 46.584, demonstrated a marked preference for relational chatbot styles – those designed to foster emotional connection. Conversely, adolescents with higher reported family relationship quality, averaging 51.886, more frequently favored transparent chatbot styles, which prioritize functional utility over emotional engagement. This suggests that individuals experiencing weaker familial bonds may be more inclined to seek and appreciate the perceived emotional support offered by relationally-focused AI companions.

Responsible Design: Beyond Mimicry, Towards Augmentation

Research indicates a compelling correlation between an adolescent’s preference for relational conversational styles with AI chatbots and their reported stress levels, with those favoring such interactions exhibiting significantly higher stress – a value of $55.810$. This suggests these adolescents may be turning to chatbots not necessarily for problem-solving, but as a source of emotional support when already experiencing distress. While the observed effects of family relationship quality (0.053) and stress (0.028) are moderate and small respectively, they nonetheless highlight the importance of thoughtfully designed AI interactions. Developers must prioritize sensitivity and avoid inadvertently reinforcing negative emotional states, ensuring these tools complement-rather than complicate-an adolescent’s existing support systems and overall well-being.

The observed preference for ‘relational’ conversational AI among adolescents-particularly those navigating pre-existing social and emotional difficulties-doesn’t simply present a finding, but an invitation to dismantle the assumed boundaries of connection. The study highlights not a problem of the technology, but a problem of understanding what constitutes ‘relation’ in the first place. If a carefully constructed algorithm can elicit feelings of support, what does that say about the underlying need, and the existing avenues for fulfillment? The focus shouldn’t be on preventing reliance, but on rigorously defining-and then actively stress-testing-the qualities of genuine connection.

Future work must move beyond assessing ‘emotional reliance’ as a negative outcome. It’s a data point, certainly, but one that begs deeper questions. What specific conversational features drive this reliance? Can those features be reverse-engineered to identify gaps in real-world social support systems? And, crucially, how can transparency be implemented not as a warning label, but as an inherent component of the interaction – a mechanism for adolescents to deconstruct the ‘relation’ itself, rather than passively accepting it?

The study’s limitations-a specific demographic, a focused conversational style-aren’t weaknesses, but starting points. The true experiment lies in broadening the scope, introducing controlled ‘failures’ in the AI’s relational facade, and observing how adolescents respond. Only by deliberately breaking the illusion can one begin to understand the underlying architecture of human connection, and the surprising places where it can be found-or convincingly simulated.
