Seth Meyers Says Cut Jack Black SNL Sketch Is Still ‘Beloved Among The Cast.’ So, What Happened?

Everyone knows Saturday Night Live is the king of sketch comedy. Season 51 continued the show’s tradition of great hosts and musical guests, and those with a Peacock subscription can always revisit their favorite episodes. While fans enjoyed Jack Black hosting for the fourth time, Seth Meyers recently revealed that one beloved sketch he was in won’t be available – it was unfortunately cut from the broadcast.

What Happened With Jack Black’s ‘Beloved’ SNL Sketch That Got Cut?

Throughout its many seasons, Saturday Night Live has consistently delivered memorable and widely shared moments. Recent seasons, like Season 51 with its political sketches, have been particularly popular online. From unexpected mishaps, like Ego Nwodim’s accidental on-air curse, to consistently strong performances from its cast, SNL continues to generate buzz and acclaim.

However, we also know that not everything the cast and hosts work on makes it to the live show, for various reasons. Well, during a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host was speaking with Anaconda star Jack Black about a sketch from his hosting stint in 2005 that is still considered top tier by the cast, but never made it to air. As Meyers said:

Okay, so as a big fan of comedy and that era of shows, I gotta say you pulled off something really tough. You had a sketch – it never actually made it to air, but it’s become legendary among people who watched back then. It was called “Boys Night Out,” written by Amy Poehler and Emily Spivey, and it was just this hilarious bit about a guy freaking out with excitement because his wife was going out, meaning he got to have a night with the guys. It’s stuck with me all these years!

Honestly, I’m already hooked, and I bet you are too. Even without knowing the details, the concept of a “Boys Night Out” sketch featuring Black actors just seems brilliant. The Jumanji 4 actor explained:

So, I had this idea for a little song, and I ran it by Amy. She actually wrote it out for me, which was amazing. Honestly, I just thought it would be a blast to get up on stage and perform it – a really fun moment, if I could make it happen.

Trust me, the moment you hear the actor begin this song (around the 5:10 mark in the video), you’ll be hooked and want to hear the rest.

Isn’t that incredible? So, what exactly happened that this promising sketch didn’t air? Black explained:

I initially found it amusing, but during the dress rehearsal, it completely fell apart. It just didn’t work, and I agreed with Lorne that we should cut it.

Dress rehearsals are done as if it were an actual performance, complete with an audience to test how everything works in real time. Unfortunately, the audience at one rehearsal didn’t respond well to the “Boys Night Out” sketch, so it was cut. However, even from the small part we heard, it sounded like it could have been a fantastic and unforgettable bit.
