Contemporary art’s increasing reliance on conceptual recombination begs the question of originality in a post-digital landscape. This paper introduces ‘Artism: AI-Driven Dual-Engine System for Art Generation and Critique’, a novel framework employing multi-agent systems and algorithmic critique to simulate art historical trajectories and deconstruct these patterns. By interlinking an artificial artist network with a critical analysis engine, we demonstrate a methodology for revealing the underlying algorithmic conditions shaping contemporary artistic expression. Could this approach not only model the evolution of art, but also offer a new lens for understanding creativity itself?

The current abundance of art that remixes pre-existing concepts, while demonstrably high in volume, increasingly contributes to a sense of aesthetic standstill. This isn’t simply a lack of technical skill, but a deeper erosion of expressive potential; when creation primarily involves the rearrangement of established ideas, the capacity for genuinely novel statements diminishes. The result is a saturation of work that feels derivative, lacking the power to evoke profound emotional or intellectual responses. Instead of expanding the boundaries of artistic language, this practice often reinforces existing tropes, fostering a sense of sameness and hindering the development of truly meaningful artistic expression. Consequently, a cycle emerges where originality is supplanted by repetition, and art struggles to offer fresh perspectives or challenge established norms.

Current methodologies within artistic research face considerable challenges when attempting to dissect and understand the increasing prevalence of derivative work in contemporary art. Traditional frameworks, reliant on subjective interpretation and historical precedent, prove inadequate for definitively establishing artistic originality – a crucial element increasingly obscured by the recombination of existing concepts. This limitation necessitates a shift towards computational approaches capable of objectively analyzing artistic features and identifying genuinely novel expressions. The Artism project directly addresses this need, proposing a system designed to move beyond qualitative assessment and offer a quantifiable metric for originality, ultimately aiming to provide a more robust and reliable understanding of creative innovation in a landscape dominated by conceptual collage.

Artism: Simulating Creativity, Avoiding the Void

These agents interact with each other through a defined communication protocol, sharing artistic outputs – textual prompts, image descriptions, or conceptual ideas – and providing critiques or suggestions. The resulting network dynamics are intended to mirror the collaborative and competitive interactions found within human artistic communities, driving emergent creativity through the exchange and refinement of ideas between uniquely defined artistic entities.

The Ismism Machine functions as a core analytical component within the Artism platform, specifically designed for the deconstruction of contemporary artistic works. Experimental results indicate a similarity score of 0.4745849854399763, quantifying the correlation between the machine’s deconstruction of artistic mechanisms and established aesthetic theory. This score, detailed in Figure 2, suggests a measurable link between the identified underlying structures of art and the principles governing its perception and evaluation. The machine’s analytical capabilities, therefore, provide a data-driven approach to understanding not only how art is made, but also why certain artistic choices resonate with established aesthetic norms.

Complementing this, ‘LAUREN’-an algorithmic argumentation system-doesn’t simply produce art, but rather defends its creative choices through logical reasoning derived from the dataset itself. This allows for a transparent audit of the AI’s decision-making process, revealing the underlying assumptions and potential prejudices that inform its aesthetic output.
