PUBG Esports is getting a major overhaul in 2026, according to game director Taehyun Kim. Plans include a new roadmap and a switch to third-person perspective gameplay.
PUBG: Battlegrounds esports is set for major updates in 2026. Taehyun Kim, the game’s director, recently shared details about the future of professional PUBG, including the decision to switch to a third-person viewpoint.
PUBG Esports goes TPP
PUBG Esports has announced a major change for 2026: they’re switching from a first-person view to a third-person view. This will make the game feel more similar to popular battle royale games like Fortnite, offering a more familiar experience for viewers and players. However, it will also set PUBG apart from games like Call of Duty and Apex Legends, which use a first-person perspective.
Kim explained his thinking, saying their main goal is to better connect players with the competitive esports scene.
Many PUBG players around the world prefer playing in the third-person view. However, competitive PUBG Esports has largely focused on the first-person perspective, according to Kim. This shift isn’t meant to diminish the success of first-person competition, but rather to help PUBG Esports grow and improve.
He highlighted the concept of merging gameplay with spectating, aiming to integrate the live service game and its esports scene into a single, cohesive experience.
Kim explained that they want to make watching professional gameplay feel more connected to the experience of actually playing the game.

PUBG Esports 2026 roadmap
Finally, the roadmap for 2026 was also revealed.
Throughout the year, there will be twelve PUBG Global Series (PGS) tournaments, and some months will even feature three of them.
The popular PUBG Nations Cup (PNC) is back in late June, and the PUBG Esports season will end with the PUBG Global Championship (PGC) in December 2026.
