As the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash gets closer, excitement for the movie is incredibly high. Many fans are curious about what will happen to Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully after the third Avatar film. James Cameron recently shared some insights into the character’s future in an interview before the movie comes out.
James Cameron talks Avatar 4 and answers Jake Sully’s future
In a recent interview with Deadline, James Cameron discussed the future of Jake Sully’s story in Avatar 4 and 5. While Cameron and Sam Worthington, who joined the conversation, didn’t reveal specific plot details, they hinted at a well-developed plan. Cameron described the process as similar to adapting pre-written novels.
Cameron explained that his approach was to write the screenplays more like novels. He emphasized that he and the team always intended Avatar: Fire and Ash to finish the initial story arc. He wanted to assure audiences that the story would have a proper conclusion, saying, “We weren’t going to leave things unresolved or abruptly end the narrative.”
The director of Titanic has ideas for potential fourth and fifth movies, but he’s not sharing them yet. He explained that he’s focused on the current project and isn’t ready to think about sequels, comparing it to not asking a woman in labor about future children.
Sam Worthington shared that James Cameron described the story of Avatar as if he were telling a novel, not just outlining a series of films. Cameron didn’t plan out each sequel individually; instead, he crafted the narrative like a long, unfolding story, similar to an old tale told around a campfire. Worthington explained that people often ask him about future installments, but Cameron doesn’t approach filmmaking that way, focusing on a larger, more comprehensive story. He compared Cameron to J.R.R. Tolkien, suggesting Cameron is building a world and writing a sprawling narrative in the same way. In a recent interview, Cameron also revealed that Avatar 4 will jump forward eight years in time.
Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in theaters on December 19, 2025.
