Fans gobsmacked over how old Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Jude Laws were in the Christmas classic movie The Holiday

Oh my gosh, it’s the movie to watch every holiday season! And the cast? Seriously, Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black all in one film? It’s a dream team, honestly! I could watch it a million times and still get excited about seeing them all together.

Fans of the movie The Holiday were shocked when an influencer made fun of the popular romantic comedy.

Influencer Helen McPherson posted a video on social media challenging ‘elder millennials’ to guess the ages of the actors in a popular movie when it was filmed. She also playfully summarized the movie’s plot and characters.

The 2006 film, The Holiday, tells the story of Iris, a journalist played by Kate Winslet, and Amanda, a Hollywood movie producer played by Cameron Diaz, who decide to swap homes for a vacation.

Amanda experiences a romantic connection with Graham, a widowed book editor and the brother of her host, while staying at Iris’s country home in Surrey. He is played by Jude Law.

Meanwhile, Iris meets Miles (played by Jack Black) and dates him. 

Starting with Winslet’s character Iris, McPherson gave her own summary of the plot. 

She described a ‘Bridget Jones’ vibe – feeling like time was slipping away to find a partner, but being okay with that. The woman in question lives a lovely life in a charming cottage in Surrey.

McPherson lightheartedly suggested she was doing well with her career and could easily get a couple of cats. He then playfully pointed out she was only thirty, still very young, calling her a ‘baby’.

Pulling a face and rolling her eyes, McPherson moved on to Diaz’s character, Amanda. 

She has a confident, alluring energy, but seems insecure about her abilities as a lover. Despite her doubts, she’s likely more skilled than she believes.

McPherson added that Diaz’s Amanda had a ‘banging’ wardrobe and had ‘massive’ success in Hollywood.

She described the woman as living a glamorous life, like something out of ‘Desperate Housewives,’ but without a husband. I initially guessed she was between 45 and 50, but it turns out she’s only 34!

‘I didn’t even have a frontal lobe at age 34,’ she quipped.

Describing Jude Law’s character, Graham, the director playfully called him a ‘napkin head’ – meaning a bit of a mess – and said he had a similar charm to Hugh Grant. She also felt the character was intended to be around 40 years old.

‘He was 34 [at the time of filming],’ she said, adding, ‘Sorry, I was just sick in my mouth.’

The influencer then turned her attention to Jack Black’s character, Miles, calling him a hilarious and quirky person.

She described him as someone you might not initially be attracted to, but whose personality you’d come to adore. She also mentioned he was 37 years old when he filmed the movie.

‘It’s so disturbing to know that I’m older than he is, and I identify as his girlfriend,’ she said.

McPherson’s video resonated with a UK viewer who questioned how realistic the story was. The commenter, a 37-year-old mother, pointed out the financial difficulties of being a young parent, saying it’s impossible to afford even basic living expenses, let alone a large house, in many areas. She specifically called the storyline’s depiction of affordability unrealistic.

Another commenter pointed out how unrealistic Jude’s life seems: a thirty-something with a multi-million pound home in Surrey, two children, and a recently widowed status, living in a house filled with years of memories and possessions.

‘No wonder millennials don’t feel like we’ve ever achieved anything.’

Nancy Meyers wrote and directed the 2006 film, The Holiday, which earned over $200 million worldwide after its initial release.
