The unexpected hiring of Scherri-Lee Biggs as the new weather presenter at Channel Nine in Melbourne has caused some controversy and upset among staff.
A 35-year-old weather reporter from Perth will be taking over from Livinia Nixon, a popular personality at Nine who left the network in November after two decades on the job.
However, Biggs’ appointment is said to have come as a surprise to fellow Nine star Madeline Spark.
Spark was allegedly told she’d get the weekday weather job in Melbourne as soon as Nixon moved on.
According to the Herald Sun, network executives at the Melbourne Cup assured the experienced presenter last month that she was guaranteed the job.
Apparently, Biggs recently moving to Melbourne has improved her chances, moving her ahead of Spark on the preference list.

Rachael Biggs is a former model and beauty queen, having been crowned Miss Universe Australia in 2011. She also worked as a weather presenter for 9News Perth for more than ten years.
Insiders are questioning why Spark was passed over for the role.
A source told the Herald Sun they were surprised by the news, noting she’s been dedicated to the job for seven years, is well-liked, and performs well on camera.
Spark is expected to remain in her current role at Nine.
Biggs will be joining Alicia Loxley and Tom Steinfort from 18 January.
This year marks the 35-year-old’s 11th anniversary with the Nine Network, where they’ve been a valued member of the team for over a decade.
Recently, the former Miss Universe Australia has been working as a weather presenter in Perth and has also appeared on the Today show, providing live coverage of important weather events and local news stories.
She has also appeared on Postcards, Celebrity Apprentice Australia and Destination WA.

Before starting her new job, Biggs told TV Week she was excited to relocate to Melbourne and had high praise for her new colleagues.
‘Melbourne holds a truly special place in my heart,’ she said.
My husband, Daniel, and I are excited to return to his hometown to be closer to family and raise our daughter, Isla.
I’m thrilled to be joining the fantastic team at 9News Melbourne, and I’m really looking forward to working with Alicia, Tom, and Tony. I can’t wait to connect with all of you watching at home.
Livinia, who first joined Nine in 1997, announced her exit from the network last month.
The TV presenter announced she’s stepping back to spend more time with her family, as her sons begin the important years of high school.
