Dan Gilroy, a writer for the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor, has discussed how the show reflects real-world issues. He specifically talked about a powerful speech in season 2, episode 10, “Welcome to the Rebellion,” for which he received an Emmy Award. Andor was created by his brother, Tony Gilroy, and serves as a prequel to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Andor follows the beginnings of the Star Wars Rebellion during the time of the Empire, focusing on the story of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a spy who played a key role in the movie Rogue One. For much of the series, Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) is a senator who attempts to stop the Empire’s growth through legal means, while also secretly providing funding to the Rebellion.
The second season of Andor reaches a critical point when the Empire violently suppresses peaceful protesters on Ghorman. Despite attempts by the Empire and fellow senators to portray the Ghormans as aggressive and obstructive, Mon Mothma bravely decides to publicly denounce the Empire and Emperor Palpatine in a powerful speech to the Senate.
I was actually starting to write this film when I was watching politicians – senators and congresspeople – just completely abandon their values and fall all over themselves to gain power. It really struck me. So, when I got to writing that particular speech, I was honestly furious. I was really, really angry. And writing it felt… freeing, like I had to get it exactly right, almost as a way to work through those feelings.
You know, watching ‘Mon’s world’ really grabbed me. I totally lost myself in it, started imagining what it would be like to live there, and honestly, I felt a huge respect for everything the filmmakers were trying to do. I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to movies I love, and I really wanted to see it all done just right – it felt like sacred territory to me. But beyond the details, what really resonated was the willingness of the characters to sacrifice everything for what they believed in, to fight against the darker side of humanity. That’s the stuff that really gets to me, and I have a deep admiration for stories that explore that kind of selflessness.

Mon has secretly supported the Rebellion for years, keeping it hidden from her family. To cover up financial discrepancies and gain assistance, she even agreed to arrange a marriage for her daughter. Immediately after giving a crucial speech, she’s forced to flee to Yavin to avoid arrest, with Cassian helping her escape the Senate.
The show Andor has been nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series twice. It also received Emmy nominations for directing and writing in both of its seasons, along with several other nominations recognizing its technical and artistic achievements. Diego Luna has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award twice for his leading role in Andor. Critics love the series, giving it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show Andor has received high praise for its intelligent and well-researched story, which dives into the complexities of fighting against a fascist regime – particularly the difficult choices and personal costs faced by those involved in the rebellion. Many viewers have noted the show’s connections to real-world political events, something writer Dan Gilroy consciously considered when crafting what many consider to be one of the most powerful scenes in the entire Star Wars saga.
