Gerard Butler Faces the Post-Apocalypse in New ‘Greenland 2’ Trailer

The latest trailer for Greenland 2: Migration, the action-packed sequel starring Gerard Butler, hints at a story centered around finding hope amidst disaster. Butler and Morena Baccarin return as John and Allison Garrity in this post-apocalyptic survival film, scheduled for release on January 9, 2026.

Five years after the first movie, the trailer for Greenland 2: Migration shows Gerard Butler and his family leaving the secure bunker where they’ve been hiding since a comet hit Earth. As they search for a new place to live, they encounter dangerous obstacles and are pushed to their limits. The film looks like a thrilling action movie that will start the new year with excitement.

Featuring Roman Griffin Davis (taking over the role of Butler, the son of John and Allison), along with Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander, Peter Polycarpou, William Abadie, and Tommie Earl Jenkins, Greenland 2: Migration is a sequel released six years after the original Greenland. The first film’s release was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, leading to multiple delays and ultimately a release directly to digital streaming platforms.

I was really pleased when this movie actually found an audience! It started slowly, relying on rentals, but then it blew up when it hit streaming services like HBO Max and Prime Video. That’s what really got the ball rolling and led to a sequel being greenlit in June 2021. Of course, everything got delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, but thankfully production finally started in 2024. Here’s what the movie is about, according to the official description:

Five years after a devastating comet strike nearly destroyed Earth, the Garrity family is forced to leave their protected shelter in Greenland. They must now undertake a dangerous trek across the ruined landscape of Europe in search of a new place to live.

Will There Be a ‘Greenland 3’?

Critics generally like Greenland, giving it a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and many consider it one of the better disaster movies of recent years. While it’s not perfect, it’s a rewatchable, exciting film with genuine emotional depth. That’s why there’s a lot of anticipation for the sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, which comes out next month.

If the second Greenland movie does well in theaters and for streaming rentals, a third film is a possibility. Producer Sébastien Raybaud mentioned to Deadline last year that something in Greenland 2 might make a third movie difficult, but they are exploring solutions to overcome that challenge.

Filming for ‘Greenland 2’ finished in July 2024, and I recently saw a rough cut – it’s looking really good. It’s a fantastic accomplishment for everyone who worked on it. With a $90 million budget, it’s exactly the kind of large-scale production we’d like to attract more of to Europe. We’re now considering plans for what comes next, though there’s a potential challenge with how things unfold in the film, but I’m confident we’ll be able to resolve it.

Fans of the post-apocalyptic action series starring Gerard Butler can mark their calendars for Greenland 2: Migration, which Lionsgate will release in theaters on January 9, 2026.
