A major role has been filled for the new Exorcist movie. Jacobi Jupe, the 12-year-old actor receiving praise for his work in Hamnet, has joined the cast. While details are being kept under wraps, he’s expected to play the son of the character played by Johansson, and potentially a child who becomes possessed.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Jupe has joined the cast of the new horror film intended to bring back a beloved franchise. While the movie was initially scheduled for release in March 2026, director Flanagan previously stated that completing his work on Carrie was his priority. He assured fans that there was no need to worry about the delay.
Director Flanagan has finished working on Carrie and, despite being involved in another Stephen King adaptation, will start filming The Exorcist in New York this March. This new installment is a revival of the original horror series and will be produced by Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek Entertainment, the companies that previously worked with David Gordon Green. They decided to move forward with a different director after the disappointing response to The Exorcist: Believer in 2023. Universal Pictures will distribute the film, having purchased the rights to continue the Exorcist story from Warner Bros. for $400 million.
Mike Flanagan Will Try to Make ‘The Exorcist’ Scary (And Relevant) Again

Universal
Mike Flanagan is currently one of the most talented horror directors working today, making him a perfect fit to reimagine a classic franchise with a fresh, contemporary approach. He’s successfully adapted challenging works by Stephen King while still maintaining his own distinctive style—you can always tell a Mike Flanagan project by its look and feel. He also frequently works with the same group of actors, which is another telltale sign.
The director has promised this next film will be his most frightening yet, and it won’t simply retell the story of the haunted girl from the original. He’s keeping the plot and his creative process closely guarded secrets. But, looking at his past movies might give us some idea of what to expect from this sequel, which many already consider to be one of the scariest films ever made.
William Friedkin’s original film was known for its shocking scenes, but it also told a deeply sad story about faith and how vulnerable we feel when we lose it. Mike Flanagan seems to be aiming for something similar with his new project – a film heavily focused on religion and featuring characters with complicated beliefs. Flanagan has explored these themes before, especially in series like Midnight Mass.
Okay, so possession stories are classic horror, but honestly, it’s really hard for filmmakers to do them well these days and actually scare people. I’m a big fan of Mike Flanagan, and I think he’s great with characters, but he’s got a huge task ahead of him: bringing the magic – and the scares – back to The Exorcist movies. I’m really hoping he can do it and remind us why we loved those films in the first place!
