Sydney Sweeney Has Seen Those Mamma Mia Fan Castings And She And Amanda Seyfried Already Have An A+ Idea

With stars like Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, the upcoming film adaptation of The Housemaid immediately grabbed my attention. Director Paul Feig seems to have captured their great on-screen chemistry, as seen in the trailer. Now, fans are hoping the two actresses will team up again for Mamma Mia! 3, and Seyfried even has a fantastic idea for how that movie musical could work!

Amanda Seyfried has been working to make Mamma Mia! 3 a reality for some time, but hasn’t made much progress. She recently took on a different kind of musical role in The Testament of Ann Lee, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. However, fans are eager to see her return as Sophie in another Mamma Mia! film, and many would love to see Sydney Sweeney join the cast. In a recent interview (see the video above), I spoke with both actresses about The Housemaid. I asked Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria (available on HBO Max), if she was aware of the online fan excitement. Here’s what she said:

I mean I might want it more. Bring it on. I would, I would die of happiness, honestly.

As a huge film fan, I’ve been following the online chatter about potential casting choices, and it turns out Sweeney has seen it too! She’s actually really keen to be part of a third Mamma Mia! movie if they ever make one, which I think is awesome. Her Anyone But You co-star is totally on board with the idea, believing Sweeney already understands and loves that world enough to really shine. And honestly, it would be so fun to see those two The Housemaid stars team up for something a little lighter and brighter!

Even though not everyone is clamoring for another Mamma Mia! movie, I’m a big fan of the idea – particularly because Amanda Seyfried and Christine Baranski are so enthusiastic about it. During our conversation, Amanda shared a fantastic suggestion for what a sequel could be about, telling me:

As recent as today Paul Feig just said he’s direct it. Yes of course, it makes so much sense!

I’m already on board! Paul Feig is a talented director who clearly worked well with Seyfried and Sweeney in their last film. Why not reunite them for another musical, this time set in Greece and featuring ABBA’s music?

Although there are no current plans for a third Mamma Mia! film, many of the actors and fans would love to see one. Amanda Seyfried is particularly eager to make it happen, but says the studio needs to start working on it soon. As she explained to me:

It’s just, tick tock Universal.

The first Mamma Mia! film came out in 2008, and the sequel, Here We Go Again, followed ten years later in 2018. If they make a third movie, fans might have to wait another decade. Given that the actors are getting older, there’s a sense of urgency.

It’s unclear if Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney will ever share a filming location in Greece, but they clearly enjoy working and promoting their movie, The Housemaid, together. Hopefully, they’ll have another opportunity to collaborate on a future project.

I just saw The Housemaid, and it’s hitting theaters wide on December 19th – definitely mark your calendars! It’s a really fun film, and honestly, I’m already hoping for a sequel. There are three more books in the series, and the chemistry between the leads, plus Paul Feig’s direction, really makes me want to see them all adapted for the big screen. Fingers crossed it does well enough to make that happen!
