Get ready, Western fans! The classic 1960 film, The Magnificent Seven, considered one of the greatest Westerns of all time, is getting a new life as an eight-episode TV show on MGM+, the streaming service owned by Amazon.
According to Variety, a new version of The Magnificent Seven is being developed by Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes. He’ll also be an executive producer, alongside Donald De Line (Billy the Kid, Foster Dade), Lawrence Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman. Filming is expected to begin next year. While Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, was previously involved in adapting the story for television, he is no longer part of the project.
MGM+’s Michael Wright praised Tim Kring as a gifted storyteller. He also noted that Kring, along with Donald De Line, Larry Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman, created a series that captures the spirit of classic Westerns while remaining true to the original film. The show highlights enduring themes of strength in unity against injustice and the possibility of redemption for even flawed characters through acts of selfless help.
The classic Western film The Magnificent Seven, featuring stars like Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson, first came out on October 12, 1960. While the cast for the upcoming TV series hasn’t been revealed yet, you can find a summary of the show below.
The Magnificent Seven is a Western set in the 1880s. It tells the story of seven skilled gunslingers who are hired to defend a quiet Quaker village after it’s attacked by bandits working for a ruthless landowner. The series focuses on the mercenaries as they live among the peaceful Quakers, and explores the difficult question of whether violence can ever be justified when protecting a community committed to peace. Each episode will delve into the backgrounds and motivations of the seven mercenaries, revealing what brought them to this mission and what they stand to lose.
This Isn’t the First Time ‘The Magnificent Seven’ Has Been Reimagined as a TV Series

United Artists
With an 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have praised The Magnificent Seven, calling it everything from a cinematic masterpiece to a thoroughly enjoyable action film with strong performances. While it’s a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s beloved Seven Samurai, this isn’t the first time the story of The Magnificent Seven has been retold – it’s also been adapted as a TV series before.
Many Western fans might recall a TV series from 1998 starring Michael Biehn, Eric Close, Ron Perlman, and Robert Vaughn – the last of whom also appeared in the 1960s original. The show, which aired on CBS, ran for two seasons and developed a dedicated, though small, fanbase before being canceled because it didn’t attract enough viewers.
We’re optimistic that the new version of The Magnificent Seven on MGM+ will be a hit. While it’s currently planned as an eight-episode series, we could produce more episodes if it proves popular. We’ll share casting details and other news as soon as we have it.
