‘I’m In Short Shorts And Flip Flops.’ Simi Liu Was Honestly Mortified The Day He Met Robert Downey Jr On Avengers: Doomsday

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow with new movies and shows available in theaters and on Disney+. One of the most exciting upcoming films is Avengers: Doomsday, promising big team-ups and fresh character combinations. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, this time as Doctor Doom, and Simu Liu recently shared a funny story about his first time meeting the famous, Oscar-winning actor.

What we know about Avengers: Doomsday is super limited, but that hasn’t stopped fan excitement from steadily building. The blockbuster will mark Liu’s first live-action return to the shared universe since Shang-Chi hit theaters in 2021, and fans can’t wait to see how he interacts with other characters. During a recent clip from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Kim’s Convenience actor spoke about a viral photo from the set of Doomsday featuring a group of the stars. In his words:

Let’s quickly discuss what I’m wearing. It seems like I’m quite underdressed. Also, this was my first time meeting Downey, so I was just as mortified then as I am showing you now.

The announcement of the Doomsday cast revealed that many teams of heroes will appear in the movie, likely joining forces to battle Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Simu Liu was excited about the chance to work with Downey Jr., but their first meeting was a bit awkward because Liu wasn’t dressed his best.

Later in the interview, Liu explained his unusual outfit – short shorts and flip-flops – for the group photo (and his first meeting with Downey). He was actually still in costume from filming a movie called Doomsday and didn’t realize photos would be taken.

Just to clarify, I was the only one who had to work that day. I went in prepared to film, and honestly, I wasn’t worried about how I looked. Then I got a text saying Robert Downey Jr. wanted to meet up afterward, and I immediately thought, ‘Oh no – I’m dressed super casually in shorts and flip-flops!’

That explanation is better, but that group photo will probably be around for a long time, and the actor—most known for playing Barbie‘s Ken—will likely continue to feel embarrassed by it. To make things worse, Robert Downey Jr. noticed the photo and even made a comment about it when they spoke, as Liu explained:

They told me Robert Downey Jr. wanted to meet everyone, so I went over. As soon as I arrived, he immediately looked at me and said, ‘Well, that’s an interesting outfit!’ It was so unexpected, I was completely caught off guard.

That initial meeting between Simu Liu and Robert Downey Jr. didn’t go as planned, but at least it was unforgettable! Luckily, they filmed together on Doomsday, giving Simu another chance to make a good impression. Now we’ll have to see how much screen time they actually share in the movie.

The new Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18th of next year. There’s a lot of speculation about what directors The Russo Brothers have planned, and it will be exciting to see how the film unfolds.
