Sam Smith received a boost from some Oscar winners when they joined him on stage during his popular concert series in New York last week.
Usually performing for huge crowds in stadiums, the British singer is offering fans a special, more personal experience with a series of 24 shows at The Warsaw in Brooklyn.
On December 10th, Will Smith performed with Ed Sheeran and country singer Brandi Carlile at the intimate 1,000-person venue, marking their 22nd show together. Actress Anne Hathaway was among those watching in the audience.
The Academy Award-winning actress, known for her leading performance in Les Misérables, posed for a backstage photo with Smith and Sheeran afterward.
Smith’s residency in New York City included a Wednesday evening performance lasting 90 minutes, with special guests Anna Wintour, the fashion icon, and American musician J.D. Sansom.
Between songs, Smith explained their choice to play smaller shows: “I wanted to be able to see everyone’s faces again.”

‘It’s been such a beautiful experience, so thank you to the Warsaw.’
Ed Sheeran, accompanied by his wife Cherry Seaborn, surprised the audience by joining Sam Smith on stage for the very first live performance of their song “Who We Love.” The collaboration was initially released on Smith’s 2023 album, Gloria.
The singer also shared a sneak peek of a new, unreleased song called ‘My Guy,’ explaining he wrote it during a summer day in Brooklyn while feeling relaxed.
They shared that it’s been lovely to perform upbeat, romantic songs, saying it feels like they’ve been waiting a long time for this kind of song.
Carlile, known for her recent work with Elton John on his album Who Believes In Angels?, performed a duet of “Party Of One” with him. They first recorded the song together for the War Child charity.
Smith will perform a 12-night residency at the Warsaw venue in October. The series of shows is titled after their recent single, “To Be Free,” which came out this summer.
The residency was later extended to 24 shows due to fan demand.
They announced the news on Instagram, explaining that this residency was a long-held dream they’d been carefully planning for a while.

Playing smaller, more personal shows is a completely different vibe, and I’m thrilled to be doing it in a city I love.
Smith explained that he wrote the new song with his close friend, Simon Aldred. It’s a raw recording—just one vocal and guitar track played all the way through—enhanced by the stunning sound of a choir they’ve been collaborating with on their latest work.
‘To Be Free was written 5 years ago. It’s more than special to me.’
Smith is expected to continue their run of live performances in San Francisco next year.
