Watch Jake Connelly’s Delightful Derek Audition for Stranger Things Season 5

Netflix Tudum shared audition footage of Jake Connelly, who plays Derek Turnbow in the upcoming season 5 of Stranger Things. Derek is the younger brother of Tina Turnbow, played by Caroline Elle Abrams, and is known for his quick temper and bullying behavior – earning him the nickname “Dipshit Derek.”

Jake Connelly’s audition tape for Stranger Things Season 5 released

Netflix shared a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, of Jake Connelly’s audition for the fifth season of Stranger Things. The video starts with Connelly introducing himself: “Hi, my name is Jake Connelly. I’m 4 feet and 11 inches tall.”

Matt Duffer explained that actor James Connelly was a natural fit for the role of Derek, and was so good in his audition that they decided to give his character a larger part throughout the season. Duffer said Connelly was both charming and funny, leading them to expand his role gradually.

The recording continues with Connelly jokingly claiming he’s not his usual self, but a more pleasant version of himself, calling himself “Delightful Derek.” This is then followed by a scene mirroring a similar exchange between his character and Winona Ryder’s Joyce from the popular show.

In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, actor David Connelly discussed his time working on Stranger Things. He was particularly surprised by the events in the first three episodes, specifically when he discovered Holly had been taken and the subsequent fallout. He also recalled being thrilled to find out his character would get to give someone the middle finger and shout a line he’s keeping secret – calling it a ‘pretty amazing’ moment while reading the scripts in his trailer.

This Netflix series is Matthew Connelly’s first major acting role; before this, he’d only appeared in a local Chicago furniture commercial.
