Okay, so I was curious about the biggest cinematic disasters of 2025, and now I know! I checked out the reviews, and here’s a rundown of the movies that everyone seemed to agree were the worst of the year in the US, covering everything from January 1st to December 31st.
Metacritic created this list of films by averaging scores from leading critics. Only movies with at least four reviews were considered.
The list also features Millie Bobby Brown’s Netflix film, The Electric State, which one reviewer called disappointing, along with War of the Worlds, starring Ice Cube.
What to Read Next
At number 15, we have Old Guy, a film directed by Simon West. It stars Christoph Waltz as an aging hitman who’s happy to be brought in by his company to mentor a young, talented, and somewhat rebellious new assassin.
Up next is Regretting You, a new film directed by Josh Boone. It stars McKenna Grace as Clara Grant, a teenager dealing with the loss of her father. Based on the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name, the movie also features Allison Williams as Clara’s mother and Mason Thames as her love interest, Morgan, as they all cope with grief.
Okay, so at number 13 on my list is this movie, Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which was actually directed by Johnny Depp. It’s a biopic about the artist Modigliani, telling his story. Pretty interesting!

Coming in at number 12 is this year’s Smurfs reboot, which The Daily Beast called boring and unremarkable. At number 11 is Juliet & Romeo, a film written and directed by Timothy Scott Bogart, with music by Evan Kidd Bogart.
Okay, so Netflix’s The Electric State landed at number 10 on the list, which honestly surprised me a little. It had Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, and it was directed by the Russo brothers, so I was expecting more! But it seems critics really didn’t like it – The New York Times was pretty harsh, calling it “obvious, garish and just plain dumb.” That’s a tough review!
Coming in at number nine is Hurry Up Tomorrow, a film with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan that expands on The Weeknd’s album of the same name. It didn’t receive positive feedback, currently holding a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 91 reviews.
Coming in at number eight is the horror sequel The Strangers: Chapter 2, and at number seven is Shadow Force, an action-thriller featuring Kerry Washington and Omar Sy.

Coming in at number six is the horror sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which didn’t receive positive reviews from critics. Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio all reprise their roles from the 2023 movie.
At number five is Simon West’s action-comedy Bride Hard, featuring Rebel Wilson as a spy and bridesmaid who must protect a wedding when it’s attacked by armed mercenaries.
Coming in fourth is Michael Polish’s film, Alarum, featuring Sylvester Stallone. Right behind it is Gunslingers, directed by Brian Skiba and starring Nicolas Cage.
The movie Playdate, starring Kevin James and Alan Ritchson (from Reacher), has been named one of the worst films of 2025. It’s about two stay-at-home dads whose simple playdate with their kids quickly spirals into a chaotic and stressful day.

According to a review in The A.V. Club, the movie Playdate is a prime example of the low-quality comedies that are harming the genre. The review criticizes the film for lacking energy and humor, describing it as a tasteless and poorly made sequence of events that barely qualifies as a movie.
Despite being popular on streaming services, War of the Worlds, the sci-fi thriller with Ice Cube, has been named the worst-reviewed movie of the year according to Metacritic.
According to Rolling Stone, this version of War of the Worlds isn’t simply bad, or even enjoyably cheesy. It’s something else entirely – a messy mix of poor special effects and unconvincing performances from Ice Cube that are strangely mesmerizing, almost allowing you to witness the decline of individual brain cells.
Enjoy the holidays with the Good Housekeeping Christmas TV Guide! It’s packed with 14 days of listings to help you plan your festive viewing, and it’s available now for just £4.75 at Morrisons, TG Jones, and other magazine shops.
