“Wholesome” Yorkshire period drama with near-perfect score reveals trailer for “heartfelt” special

Channel 5 has released a trailer for the All Creatures Great and Small Christmas special, which will air this Christmas. The popular period drama, set in Yorkshire, recently finished its sixth season and will conclude the year with this festive episode on December 24th.

The brief trailer shows children dressing up for the nativity play, lots of festive decorations, and a touch of romance.

But where are the adorable animals trapped in life or death situations?

Don’t worry, the official description hints we’ll see some of that! It says: “This Christmas special is set in 1945, as the town of Darrowby gets ready for its first Christmas after the war.”

When Helen falls ill, James takes on the task of organizing the village Nativity play. He quickly finds it difficult to balance rehearsals with his work as a vet, and things get even more complicated when questions arise about whether Tricki will become a father.

Siegfried is back at Mrs. Stokes’ farm – also known as Susan Hilton’s place – and Hilda the goat is up to her old tricks. Meanwhile, at Skeldale, Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) is getting everyone excited for the local darts competition. Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) is rushing to get the Christmas tree decorated, and Charlotte (Gaia Wise) is helping him.

With old friends reconnecting and meaningful talks happening, the holidays fill us with laughter, chances to think about the past, and maybe a few unexpected moments.

But that’s not the only trip to Yorkshire 5 is gifting fans on Christmas Eve.

Before the special airs, at 8pm, you can watch the documentary All Creatures Great & Small: Behind The Scenes. It features Graeme Hall taking viewers onto the set and sharing how the show was made.

The show’s synopsis reveals that Graeme provides behind-the-scenes details – from the ingredients in the on-screen medications to the making of Mrs. Hall’s delicious food, and even how the team captures complicated animal scenes. The cast also share their memories of six years creating the network’s most-watched drama.

Not only is the show the most popular drama on 5, it’s all well received by critics.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the show very high ratings, averaging 99% positive. However, this score is based on the first four seasons only, as those are the only ones with enough reviews. Season one has a 97% positive rating, while seasons two through four all have perfect 100% scores.

You can stream all past episodes of All Creatures Great & Small on the 5 app. A new documentary will air at 8pm on Christmas Eve, immediately followed by a special at 9pm.

As a total TV fan, I’m so excited about the Good Housekeeping Christmas TV Guide! It’s got listings for a full 14 days of Christmas shows, so you can plan all your festive viewing. I just picked one up for only £4.75 – you can find it at Morrisons, TG Jones, and most other magazine shops.
