New Girl fans ‘absolutely rocked’ to find out Rob Reiner was an iconic director after his shocking murder

Fans of the sitcom The New Girl are sharing that they didn’t realize Rob Reiner, who recently passed away at age 78, was a famous director until seeing him as a guest star on the show.

Reiner and his wife, 68-year-old Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered dead at their home in Brentwood, California, on Sunday night.

The Reiner family shared news on Sunday evening of the unexpected and devastating deaths of Michele and Rob Reiner. They expressed deep sadness and requested privacy as they grieve this incredibly painful loss.

According to law enforcement sources at TMZ, police are investigating the deaths of a couple as a homicide. Their bodies were found with apparent knife injuries.

Following the sad news, fans of the show New Girl shared on X (formerly Twitter) that while Rob Reiner directed famous movies like When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, Stand By Me, and Misery, they’ll always cherish his work on the sitcom.

As a lifestyle expert, I was so saddened to hear about Jeff Reiner. Many of you probably remember him as Bob Day on New Girl – he played Zooey Deschanel’s character Jess’s dad. He was such a warm and lovable presence on the show, appearing in 11 episodes between 2012 and 2018, and he really felt like part of the family!

Hockey writer Pete Blackburn shared on X that he surprisingly first became aware of director Rob Reiner through his role as Jess’s dad on the TV show “New Girl,” and was shocked to learn more about Reiner’s extensive career when he looked him up on Wikipedia.

‘Just an absolute monster director & someone who made me smile anytime he showed up on screen.’

Someone else shared that ‘New Girl’ is one of their favorite shows, praising Rob Reiner’s hilarious guest appearances as the dad. They often watched episodes when they were feeling down, as they always cheered them up. They finished with well wishes and a prayer emoji.

Someone else on X pointed out that while Rob Reiner is known for directing great films, many people also adore his funny and endearing role as Jess’s dad on the show New Girl.

This September, Rob Reiner debuted the long-awaited sequel to his classic 1984 mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap. He wrote, directed, and starred in both films, with the new one titled Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

Rob Reiner, son of the famous comedian and filmmaker Carl Reiner, also became a Hollywood figure. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 98.

Reiner began his career as an actor, and he’s most famous for playing Michael ‘Meathead’ Stivic on the television show All In The Family.

While working on the show between 1971 and 1978, he received two Emmy Awards and was nominated for five Golden Globes.

In the 1980s, Reiner successfully changed direction in his career with his innovative comedy, This Is Spinal Tap. The film became hugely influential and paved the way for many mockumentaries that followed.

Over the next twenty years, he became a highly sought-after director in Hollywood, creating beloved films and major box office successes like Stand By Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), Misery (1990), A Few Good Men (1992), The American President (1995), and The Bucket List (2007).

Even though directing became his main focus, Reiner continued to act later in his career. He appeared in popular films like The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), playing Leonardo DiCaprio’s father, and even had roles in his own film And So It Goes (2014), the comedy Sandy Wexler (2017), and the recent sequel to Spinal Tap.

Rob Reiner’s 1989 movie, When Harry Met Sally, is often ranked among the best romantic comedies of all time.

Rob Reiner met his future wife, photographer Michele Singer, while working on a movie. They married in 1989 and had three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy.

Rob Reiner was married to the late Penny Marshall, a well-known actress and director, and he helped raise her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Marshall passed away in 2018 at the age of 75.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve learned everyone has a story, and it’s important to remember that. I want to share that Reiner’s son, Nick, who’s 32, has bravely opened up about his past challenges – he’s dealt with drug addiction and, at times, unfortunately experienced homelessness. It takes incredible strength to be so open, and I admire him for sharing his journey.

In 2016, Rob directed the movie Being Charlie, a drama partly based on Nick’s own life. Nick explained the film drew inspiration from his experiences with rehab, which began when he was about 15 years old.

In a 2016 interview with People, Nick shared that he experienced homelessness in Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described spending nights and weeks living on the streets, stating it was a difficult time.

By 2016, Nick reported having been to rehab 17 times. He also stated that he experienced homelessness after declining to return to a rehabilitation program.

Nick, who was 22 at the time, said in 2016 that his last rehab stint had been three years earlier.

Oh my god, when he talked about Being Charlie, it just broke my heart and filled me with so much hope! He was so honest about wanting to stay clean, you know? He said he never wanted to end up on the streets again, and honestly, hearing him say that just made me root for him even harder. It felt so raw and real, like he was really fighting for his future, and I was just praying he’d succeed.

He told People that his experience was incredibly dangerous, and he easily could have died. He attributes his survival to pure luck, saying it was a matter of chance.
