Home Alone is now a beloved Christmas movie, known for its funny story and hilarious scenes.
Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the beloved holiday film has officially been named the UK’s favorite Christmas movie.
Oh my gosh, “Home Alone”! It’s the BEST! It’s about this little kid, Kevin – Macaulay Culkin, who is just amazing – and his family accidentally leaves him behind when they go to Paris for Christmas. He’s only eight years old, and he has to defend the house all by himself from these hilarious, bumbling burglars! It’s just… perfection!
Oh my gosh, Home Alone! It’s basically Christmas now, isn’t it? I mean, it started as just one movie, but it was SO good they made five more! And every single year, without fail, it’s on TV. It’s just… perfect. I can’t imagine the holidays without it!
Yet even die-hard fans may have missed certain fibs and fabrications in the film.
So, how many did you spot?

Kevin’s gangster movie is fake
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always said a good distraction can solve a lot of problems! In the case of Kevin McCallister in ‘Home Alone,’ he cleverly uses scenes from an old black and white gangster film, ‘Angels with Filthy Souls,’ to convince both a pizza delivery guy and those pesky Wet Bandits that his house isn’t what it seems. It’s a brilliant, if a little dramatic, way to avoid unwanted attention!
The scene coined the iconic phrase: ‘Keep the change, ya filthy animal’.
Let’s be clear – that iconic movie moment isn’t actually happening! It was specifically created for ‘Home Alone’ as a little nod to an older film called ‘Angels With Dirty Faces’. The filmmakers wanted that playful illusion, and built the whole scene just for that purpose.
In a recent interview, director Christopher Columbus revealed that the entire gangster movie was filmed in a single day.
He mentioned that ‘Home Alone’ was one of the final movies to use an older lighting technique called carbon-arc, which was commonly used during the mid-20th century when making Technicolor films.
We filmed the ‘Angels with Filthy Souls’ scene using the same approach. The strong contrast of black and white gave it the feel of an old movie, and I believe that’s why some viewers mistakenly believe it’s an actual film from that time period.
Seth Rogen was surprised to discover that the classic movie Kevin watches in Home Alone wasn’t a real, existing old film – he genuinely believed it was! He shared his childhood misconception on Twitter.

Santa isn’t real blunder
The movie reveals a disheartening truth – that Santa Claus isn’t real – and also shows the loneliness of waking up home alone on Christmas morning.
When Kevin came downstairs, he found the milk and cookies he’d left out for Santa were still untouched.
The mistake went uncorrected, and it appears Kevin didn’t even realize it, likely hoping young viewers wouldn’t notice either.

Buzz’s girlfriend isn’t actually a girl
Once Kevin realizes he’s truly alone in the house, he starts looking around and discovers a photo of Buzz’s girlfriend.
Looking at the framed snap, Kevin exclaims: ‘Buzz’s girlfriend, woof’.
Okay, so I was so worried about the girl in that scene, it seemed really harsh! But then I found out the director is actually a genius! They decided it would be way too upsetting to use a real person, so they didn’t! Honestly, it makes me love the movie even more – they thought of everything!
Instead he put his own son in a blonde wig for the scene, so Buzz’s girlfriend is in fact is a boy.

Kevin’s anti-police stance
The director definitely stretched the boundaries of what’s realistic for an eight-year-old when writing the story.
Whether it was figuring out why a gold door handle didn’t shatter when heated, or precisely calculating the right height and weight for paint cans to hit a target, it was clear Kevin was exceptionally talented.
He was a remarkably resourceful child who built sophisticated traps to catch the burglars himself, which makes you wonder why he didn’t think to call the police for help.
On top of that, many fans have questioned how Marv and Harry actually survived.
Considering the abuse this body endured – including having their head set on fire, being hit with paint cans, stepping on broken ornaments and nails, and even being shot with a BB gun – it’s astonishing they didn’t go into shock. It’s practically torture.
It’s frustrating that the police offer little help, often just sending one officer to check in. Yet, they aggressively pursued the young person when they shoplifted a toothbrush, chasing them down the street.

Marv’s fake feet
When Marv stomps out into the snow bare foot, they aren’t actually his real feet.
It was so cold that he couldn’t bear to walk barefoot, so he put on rubber soles to protect his feet.

Scenes filmed in reverse
It looks like Kevin’s days are numbered when he is almost hit by a van.
To avoid the danger of filming a van speeding towards a child, the scene was cleverly shot in reverse.
Kevin walked backward as the van drove away from him. The footage was then reversed, and the sound was added in post-production.
If you watch carefully, you’ll notice the smoke is blowing towards the van, not drifting away from it.
