Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Master of Evil
For over two decades, Count Dooku has been a captivating villain in the Star Wars saga. Recent information suggests a surprising new detail about his role as a Sith Lord, potentially adding a significant layer to his backstory.
Count Dooku has long been portrayed as a Jedi who fell from grace, believing he could fix the Republic and Jedi Order by turning to the dark side and working with Sidious. But it’s now clear that Dooku was a true Sith Lord, just like Palpatine’s other followers, and he actually betrayed Sidious during the Clone Wars.
Count Dooku Seemed To Be More Loyal Than Most Sith Apprentices

Darth Bane’s Rule of Two dictates that Sith Lords and their apprentices have a relationship built on eventual betrayal. Apprentices are meant to plot, prepare to take their master’s place, and ultimately kill them. But Count Dooku seemed unusually loyal to Sidious, more so than other Sith pairings we’ve seen in Star Wars stories.
During the Clone Wars, Dooku trained Asajj Ventress as his apprentice, but he followed Palpatine’s order to eliminate her. He feared that Ventress becoming too strong, combined with his own power, could challenge Palpatine’s control. Ventress actually survived, and Dooku’s willingness to abandon her clearly showed how devoted he was to Sidious.
Although Dooku requested Obi-Wan Kenobi’s assistance in defeating the Sith during Attack of the Clones, he consistently appeared devoted to Palpatine.
I’ve always seen Count Dooku as someone who genuinely believed in what he was doing, even if it was terrible. He wasn’t just going through the motions – he built up the Separatist army, actively kept the Clone Wars going, and stopped any attempts at peace, all because he was completely devoted to Darth Sidious’s plan for the galaxy. He really bought into Sidious’s vision, and that made him a dangerous opponent.
Looking back, Dooku’s actions really click. It’s becoming clearer he thought the Separatists were supposed to win, and that he’d be right there with Palpatine, ruling after the Republic and the Jedi finally fell. It all feels tragically ironic, though, because Sidious ultimately double-crossed him, choosing Anakin Skywalker as his apprentice instead – a betrayal we see play out so brutally in Revenge of the Sith.
Despite everything previously discussed, we’ve recently learned for certain that Count Dooku secretly planned to eventually become more powerful than his master.
Now, A Major Dooku Betrayal Against Sidious Has Been Revealed

Now, the prologue of Adam Christopher’s Master of Evil helps change that Count Dooku perception.
The story mainly follows Darth Vader’s quest to understand life and death in the early days of the Empire. However, we also discover that during the Clone Wars, Sidious tasked Count Dooku with investigating a mysterious dark power in the Diso system—a power linked to a Force-sensitive shaman who could resurrect the dead.
The story begins with Count Dooku finding a huge, ancient temple brimming with dark side energy. Recognizing its power, he makes a decidedly Sith-like decision: using the Force to lift the entire temple and have it moved in secret on a cargo ship, concealing it in a hidden location.
Dooku told Sidious that the power had vanished, but he was lying. He secretly kept it for himself, creating a personal reserve of dark side energy and knowledge that Sidious couldn’t access or control.
This opening suggests Dooku was secretly building his own power in anticipation of a future conflict. He clearly intended to eventually betray and overthrow Sidious, demonstrating that he was a truly ambitious and ruthless Sith Lord, just as dangerous as any other.
Adam Christopher’s Star Wars: Master of Evil is available now from Lucasfilm Publishing.
