‘Some Things Are Just Categorically Good’: Ryan Reynolds Recruited Matthew Lillard For An A+ Ad After Quentin Tarantino’s Criticisms

Quentin Tarantino, the famous director, has recently faced some criticism for comments he made about other actors. He publicly criticized Paul Dano, calling him a weak actor, during an interview on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. He also expressed his dislike for the acting of Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard. Interestingly, Lillard is now featured in a new advertisement created by Ryan Reynolds.

After Paul Dano received some criticism online, several of Quentin Tarantino’s fellow directors, like Matt Reeves (director of The Batman), publicly showed their support. At the same time, Matthew Lillard shared how much Tarantino’s comments had upset him. Now, a new Mint Mobile commercial starring Lillard has been released, and it highlights his talent and achievements. Here’s a look at the ad:

Ryan Reynolds has a knack for perfectly timing his marketing campaigns to current pop culture trends. He’s known for humorous ads, like the one with Nick Cannon joking about his large family, and another featuring Gwyneth Paltrow after a bit of controversy surrounding Coldplay. So it’s no surprise he’s now included popular actor Damian Lillard in a national ad for his mobile company, capitalizing on all the recent buzz around Lillard.

It’s worth pointing out that Reynolds and Lillard don’t mention Quentin Tarantino directly in the video. However, the ad was released just a week after Tarantino publicly shared his opinions. Additionally, Lillard includes a joke in the commercial about not being universally liked as an actor.

It’s clear that the actor, who is known from She’s All That, knows he has dedicated fans. However, it’s upsetting to hear him joke about not being well-liked. He recently mentioned during a screening of Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 that he doesn’t feel popular in Hollywood, and it honestly makes me sad that he thinks that way.

Although the recent Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel received mixed reviews, many of Matthew Lillard’s films are still fan favorites, including Scooby-Doo and Scream. Throughout his career, he’s consistently delivered memorable performances – often funny, wild, and occasionally unsettling. The reaction to Ryan Reynolds’ post on X (formerly Twitter) clearly shows that both Lillard and Reynolds have a dedicated fanbase.

  • Matthew Lillard really is a legend – @braveheart_89

Honestly, one bright spot in everything happening right now is seeing all the love for Matthew Lillard. It’s so great to see the SLC Punk! actor getting so much appreciation from fans. If you’re looking to see him on the big screen, he’s currently in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and excitingly, he’s also coming back as Stu Macher in Scream 7, which is slated for release on February 27, 2026. I’m already counting down the days!
