Charlie Cox’s New Prime Video Comedy Becomes A Streaming Hit Despite Dismal 33% RT Score

Charlie Cox is having a successful year with roles in both television and films, including a new project on Prime Video. As 2025 nears its end, romantic comedies are a perfect fit for the holidays, and Cox, known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now leading his own romantic comedy film.

The new Prime Video film, Merv, which came out on December 10th, is gaining popularity with viewers despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. Currently, Merv is the third most-watched movie in the United States, following Oh. What. Fun at number one and How The Grinch Stole Christmas! at number two.

The movie follows Russ, played by Cox, and Anna (Zooey Deschanel) as their dog, Merv, becomes noticeably depressed after they split up. Trying to cheer Merv up leads to some unexpected developments and forces the ex-couple to reconnect.

Merv, directed by Jessica Swale, Dane Clark, and Linsey Baer, features Chris Redd, David Hunt, Patricia Heaton, and Wynn Everett in its cast. Though popular with viewers on Prime Video, the film hasn’t received very positive reviews from critics.

Currently, the film Merv has a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but this is based on only 18 reviews, so the score is likely to change as more reviews come in. It hasn’t received enough ratings yet to appear on Popcornmeter, which requires over 50 reviews.

Grant Hermanns at ScreenRant reviewed the movie Merv, pointing out that while the acting is strong thanks to performers like Cox and Deschanel, the writing isn’t consistently good. He suggests, though, that viewers who enjoy similar romantic comedies – such as Lindsay Lohan’s Netflix films or Hallmark movies – might still find Merv enjoyable.
