A fantastic science fiction show from three years ago is now popular on streaming services, and it’s launching at a great moment for the series. Over the years, the technology used to create amazing science fiction worlds in movies has improved dramatically. Now, some science fiction TV shows are delivering visual effects that are as good as—or even better than—those in major motion pictures.
When it comes to science fiction and stunning visual effects, the Avatar movies by James Cameron still lead the way. They’ve shown that 3D can be truly exciting when used with a strong, creative vision to build a captivating world. The franchise remains impressive, and is now easily enjoyed through streaming services.
According to FlixPatrol, Avatar: The Way of Water is currently the 10th most popular movie on Disney+ worldwide. This comes at a great time for the series, as the next movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will be released in theaters next week on December 19th. Notably, a short preview of Avatar: Fire and Ash | A Special Look is also trending, currently ranking 7th on the platform.

When looking at U.S. rankings, FlixPatrol only tracks the top 10 most popular movies and TV shows. Currently, Avatar: The Way of Water isn’t among them. However, this could change as the release date of Avatar: Fire and Ash approaches. Globally, though, the sci-fi film is doing very well.
As a big movie fan, I’ve been checking out what’s trending on Disney+, and right now Avatar: The Way of Water is doing really well! It’s actually the #6 most-watched movie in a bunch of countries, including places like Jamaica, Haiti, and the Bahamas. Plus, it’s hanging out in the Top Ten in other spots too – it’s #10 in Brazil, #8 in both France and Mexico, and #9 in Italy, to name a few!
Avatar: The Way of Water earned over $2.3 billion globally, making it a huge success. Because of this, the next movie in the series, Fire and Ash, is predicted to also be a box office hit, earning over $2 billion. Several things are contributing to this expectation, including strong interest generated by previews of Fire and Ash and the continued popularity of The Way of Water on Disney+.
Next week, the very first trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday will play before showings of Avatar: Fire and Ash in movie theaters. That means fans can get a sneak peek at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom before enjoying the new Avatar film. The success of Avatar: The Way of Water on streaming services is a good sign for how well the next Avatar movie might do.
