Reclusive Jack Nicholson could return to spotlight says his former director James L. Brooks

James L. Brooks, who still keeps in touch with Jack Nicholson, suggests the famous actor might return to acting after a period of retirement.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! My absolute favorite director, he’s 85 now, actually directed Jack Nicholson – yes, the Jack Nicholson, who’s 88 and barely ever does anything anymore – in four of his films! Four! Including classics like ‘Broadcast News’ from ’87 and ‘As Good As It Gets’ in ’97. It’s just… a perfect pairing, honestly. I’ve seen those movies a million times!

‘I’m sure he’ll be working again,’ Brooks told E! News on Tuesday. 

‘I hope it’s with me.’

Matt Groening, one of the creators of The Simpsons, and director James L. Brooks first worked together on the acclaimed film Terms of Endearment. Both of them received Academy Awards for their work on the movie in 1984.

Brooks also gave a final on-screen role to a devoted LA Lakers fan, casting him as Charles Madison, the CEO in the 2010 romantic comedy How Do You Know. Unfortunately, the film wasn’t a success, earning only $48.7 million at the box office despite costing $120 million to make.

Jack Nicholson has starred in many critically acclaimed and beloved films, such as Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Shining, Batman, A Few Good Men, and About Schmidt.

A dedicated art collector and California Air National Guard veteran, he’s also a highly acclaimed actor. He’s won three Oscars, six Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award – a testament to his successful career.

Lou Adler, a longtime friend and producer of Jack Nicholson, seemed doubtful about Nicholson returning to acting. In a 2023 interview on the ‘WTF with Marc Maron’ podcast, Adler mentioned someone tried to cast Nicholson in a film and had spoken with him about it.

Jack protested, saying he didn’t want to participate. He explained he’d spent the day relaxing – he’d sat under a tree and read a book.

Last week, Jack Nicholson’s daughter, Lorraine Nicholson, posted a rare photo on Instagram featuring both him and his son, Ray Nicholson.

Jack Nicholson hasn’t been publicly seen since he attended the SNL 50th Anniversary celebration in New York City with Lorraine on February 16th.

The actor, once known for his many romantic relationships, had two children with his “Man Trouble” co-star, Rebecca Broussard, before their relationship ended in 1994.

When Jack Nicholson’s partner, Anjelica Huston, became pregnant with another man’s child, it led to the end of their 17-year relationship, which had begun in 1973.

Let me tell you, sometimes family stories are… complicated! It turns out Jack Nicholson privately acknowledged Caleb Goddard, now 55, as his son. This came to light after a brief relationship Jack had with his ‘Five Easy Pieces’ co-star, Susan Anspach. Susan and her then-husband, Mark Goddard, actually raised Caleb, but Jack kept it quiet for years.

Jack Nicholson has a strained relationship with his 31-year-old daughter, Tessa Gourin, and her mother, Jennine Gourin, as he has never publicly confirmed he is her father.

He fathered 44-year-old daughter Honey Hollman with Danish model Winnie Hollman.

You know, Jack Nicholson has a fascinating family history! I always find it interesting learning about the lives of stars beyond the screen. He and his first wife, Sandra Knight, who he was married to for six years, had a daughter together, Jennifer. She’s 62 now – can you believe it? They were actually co-stars in a film called ‘Terror’ when they met, and their marriage ended back in 1968.
