Idris Elba, famous for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the TV show The Wire, has shared that he’s considering stepping back from acting. Unlike Daniel Day-Lewis or Quentin Tarantino, he doesn’t plan a complete exit from the entertainment industry. Instead, the Luther star wants to explore opportunities behind the camera and try new creative challenges.
According to The Daily Mail, actor Idris Elba is at the Red Sea International Film Festival promoting his new short film, Dust to Dreams. He directed the film and shared that he’s enjoying working behind the camera, and intends to continue directing in the future. He discussed this during a recent Q&A session.
Look, I adore acting, I really do, and I hope my fans aren’t upset, but I’m starting to feel a real pull towards directing. I’ve been at this acting thing for a long time, and while I still love it, directing just feels like a chance to express myself in a new way, to be involved with a film from a totally different angle. It’s something I’m really passionate about and I’m hoping to focus on it more and more.
Idris Elba is not only focusing on directing, but he’s also considering stepping back from acting to pursue further education. He’s interested in studying a field like human science to better support his philanthropic and activist efforts, allowing him to be more effective in those areas.
Idris Elba has considered a career in politics, but feels like an outsider in that world. While he’s been around powerful leaders, he recognizes he needs to learn more to effectively use his position as an activist and make a real difference.
I often feel out of place in the world of politics. I’m suddenly around world leaders and government officials discussing complex issues I don’t feel qualified to address. I don’t have any desire to be a politician myself, but I am interested in learning more so I can be more effective in advocating for change in those settings.
You know, as someone who works in film, I’m constantly presented with amazing experiences – from performing in front of huge crowds to actually meeting world leaders. But honestly, a lot of the time I feel like I’m just reacting on gut feeling, relying on instinct more than any formal training or expertise I might have.
