Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson confirmed for new Hunger Games movie

Great news for fans of The Hunger Games! Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are officially returning for the new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping.

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, who played Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, starred in all four of the original Hunger Games movies. Now, they’re returning to their roles for a new film that takes place 24 years before the story we first saw.

Okay, so if you’re a Hunger Games fan like me, you’ll probably not be shocked to hear this: the new book has a part where older Katniss and Peeta actually listen to Haymitch tell his story about his Hunger Games. It’s pretty cool to finally get that perspective!

What to Read Next

The story, Sunrise on the Reaping, opens on the day of the 50th Hunger Games. We meet a 16-year-old Haymitch, portrayed by Joseph Zada, as he competes representing District 12.

Earlier this year, Josh Hutcherson encouraged Suzanne Collins to write additional books in The Hunger Games series, hoping to reprise his role as Peeta Mellark.

At Dream It Con, the actor expressed his enthusiasm about reprising his role as Peeta. He praised the story and the original Hunger Games film, saying he found playing Peeta a rewarding experience and would gladly do it again.

I’d love to know what happened after Peeta and Katniss started their family and before the story concluded – specifically, how the world evolved to reach that point. If Suzanne Collins ever decides to write another book about it, I’d be the first to buy it!

Two years earlier, Lawrence expressed the same desire in an interview with Variety, stating she’d “absolutely” be up for reprising her role as Katniss.

“If Katniss ever could ever come back into my life, 100%,” she said.

In addition to the main cast, Ralph Fiennes returns as President Coriolanus Snow, a role previously played by Donald Sutherland in the original films and Tom Blyth in the prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The new film is titled Sunrise on the Reaping.

Jesse Plemons is cast as Plutarch Heavensbee, with Elle Fanning playing Effie Trinket and Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman.

The film features a talented cast, including Mckenna Grace, Ben Wang, Glenn Close, Billy Porter, Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, Iris Apatow, Whitney Peak, and Kara Tointon.

The new Hunger Games prequel film, Sunrise on the Reaping, will be released in theaters on November 20, 2026. The book it’s based on is currently available for purchase.
