Kevin Smith Reveals Alan Rickman Replacement For Long-Gestating Dogma 2

Kevin Smith has announced who will take on the role originally played by Alan Rickman in the upcoming sequel to his 1999 film, Dogma. Rickman famously portrayed Metatron, the voice of God, in the comedy. Sadly, Rickman passed away in 2016 at age 69 after battling pancreatic cancer.

So, I was listening to the Film Weekly podcast, and Kevin Smith dropped a fascinating tidbit about a potential Dogma 2. Apparently, if the sequel ever happens, he’s got Helen Mirren in mind to play Metatron. But this wouldn’t be the same Metatron we saw in the original – he envisions her as a completely new take on the character, specifically for the sequel.

Smith points out that Adam Driver bears a resemblance to a younger, taller Alan Rickman, making him an expected choice for the role. I’m writing this role with Helen Mirren in mind. She reminds me a lot of Alan Rickman – not exactly like the character Metatron, but she has a similar presence for this movie. I actually met her years ago with Alan at an awards show, and when I realized Alan wasn’t available, I briefly considered Adam Driver because he has a young Alan Rickman vibe, but it didn’t feel right. Then I remembered that connection with Helen Mirren, and as a writer, I latched onto it. She’s also one of my favorite actresses, so it felt like a good fit. That’s why I’m now tailoring the role specifically for her.

Alan Rickman and Helen Mirren were close friends in real life and collaborated on several films together. One of their last projects was the 2015 thriller, Eye in the Sky, which proved to be one of Rickman’s final performances before he passed away.

Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman starred as Antony and Cleopatra in a 1998 stage production at Britain’s National Theater. In a 2016 interview with Vanity Fair, Mirren fondly remembered working with Rickman on the play.

Taking on the role was challenging because he had to step in unexpectedly when the original actor left. He bravely accepted the part, which is known for being very emotionally intense. Throughout the performance, he was incredibly giving and shared the stage generously.

I’ve been trying to get Moose Jaws made for a decade now, and we’re getting close. But a sequel to Dogma has the advantage of an established title, which makes it easier to get funding. It will be much simpler to finance Dogma than Moose Jaws.

Many fans still consider Dogma to be one of Kevin Smith’s best films. He’s said that the movie’s recognizable title makes it easier to get made than some of his other ideas. However, even with the potential return of stars like Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Salma Hayek, and Chris Rock, a sequel isn’t guaranteed.

Any follow-up to Dogma will face a tough challenge matching the impact of the first film. While Alan Rickman’s passing is a significant loss, Helen Mirren could powerfully take on his role as Metatron in a new version. Because Metatron is an angelic being, the sequel wouldn’t need to explain any changes to the character’s appearance extensively.
