Good news for those who enjoy American Hustle – the movie is now a big hit on Paramount+! David O. Russell’s ‘70s crime drama has quickly become one of the most popular titles on the streaming service, not long after it was added.
According to data from FlixPatrol as of December 10th, American Hustle is currently the third most popular movie on Paramount+ in the United States. Prior to August 1st, the film was only available for streaming on Pluto TV, but has since moved to Paramount+.
It’s no surprise that American Hustle is gaining popularity again. When it came out in 2013, the movie was a huge success with both critics and audiences. It won three Golden Globes and received ten Academy Award nominations. Plus, it made $250 million worldwide on a budget of just $40 million – a really impressive return.
Film critic Morganti praised American Hustle, highlighting how well the four lead actors brought a 1970s New Jersey crime story to life. She also commended the strong supporting cast, including Michael Peña, Robert De Niro, Shea Whigham, Alessandro Nivola, and Jack Huston. Morganti noted it’s unusual to see so many talented actors collaborate so effectively in a single film, emphasizing that American Hustle is a true ensemble piece driven by its performances, and stands out as a uniquely stylish modern crime film.

Although American Hustle remains a well-regarded film, some of the actors have shared that making it wasn’t easy. Amy Adams, in 2016, described a difficult experience working with director David O. Russell, saying she frequently cried during filming.
In a 2016 interview with British GQ, Amy Adams described feeling deeply upset while on set most days. She contrasted this with Jennifer Lawrence, who seemed unaffected by negative experiences. Adams explained that she personally absorbs things much more intensely—she’s not able to brush things off like Lawrence—and also feels strongly that it’s wrong to see anyone treated poorly.
This fall, Lawrence discussed her experience filming the movie, echoing Adams’ comments about how she generally brushed off Russell’s blunt approach. Appearing on The New York Times’ podcast, The Interview, the actress, who was 23 during filming, explained that Russell communicated directly, without being fake or yelling. She said that if he disapproved of something, he’d simply say it was bad and needed improvement, which she actually found to be a constructive form of feedback.
Lawrence acknowledged that Adams’ relationship with Russell might have been different from her own. She speculated, “Perhaps Russell was more critical of Adams than he was of me,” but admitted she wasn’t sure.
American Hustle is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
