Jeff Garcia, L.A. comedian and ‘Jimmy Neutron’ voice actor, dies at 50

Jeff Garcia, a beloved L.A. comedian and prominent Nickelodeon voice actor, has died. He was 50.

Comedian and frequent performer at the Laugh Factory, Garcia, passed away on Wednesday following a short stay in the hospital, his son, Joseph “JoJo” Garcia, shared on Instagram.

I was deeply moved by JoJo’s heartfelt words about his father. He described a man who wasn’t just family – a father, son, brother, uncle, and cousin – but, most importantly, a true best friend. It’s clear this man had a profound impact on JoJo’s life, shaping him with lessons and guidance he still carries with him every day. It’s a beautiful tribute to a truly special person.

The stand-up show “Let It Out,” held at the Laugh Factory, proved that comedy shows can easily be made welcoming to neurodivergent audiences.

JoJo, now pursuing comedy, shared that he spoke with his father daily, often discussing his goals and dreams for his career.

“He believed in me, in a way that nobody else did,” he wrote. “I’m going to make you proud pops.”

Representatives for Garcia were unable to be reached Wednesday for comment.

Erin von Schonfeldt, a leader at The Improv, shared that Jeff Garcia was a cherished part of their family and a gifted performer. She expressed deep sadness over his passing, saying everyone is heartbroken by the loss.

To mark its 60th anniversary, the comedy group is releasing a special on Netflix called “Improv: 60 and Still Standing,” which will be available starting November 7th.

George Garcia began his career performing at comedy clubs in Southern California during the 1990s. He became best known for voicing the character Sheen Estévez in the 2001 animated film “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.” He continued to voice Sheen in the “Jimmy Neutron” TV series for three seasons and even starred in his own short-lived spin-off show, “Planet Sheen.”

The comedian also provided voice work for other animated projects like “Barnyard” and “Happy Feet,” where he collaborated with Robin Williams.

In a 2021 radio interview with Freddy Rivera, Garcia revealed that his famous colleague had developed an attraction to him, saying, “He fell in love with my ass, man.”

“If there was a comedy Mount Rushmore, he’d be the first [face],” he said.

Robin Williams’ high school classmates had a funny prediction when he graduated from Redwood High: they named him ‘most humorous’ but also ‘least likely to succeed’.

After hearing about Jeff Garcia’s passing, many fans shared heartfelt messages of support. Comedian Eric Schwartz commented on a post by JoJo, saying Jeff was one of the first people to support his comedy career and played a key role in helping him grow as a performer.

“He generously gave me and many other comedians a lot of opportunities to shine,” Schwartz said.

Debi Derryberry, who voiced Jimmy Neutron, also shared a tribute on Instagram.

I was heartbroken to learn that my friend Jeff Garcia, known to many as the voice of Sheen from Jimmy Neutron, has passed away. We recently saw each other at a convention, and he always had everyone laughing. He will be deeply missed.
